Progress Report on Tsumura's #OneMoreChoice Initiative
Tsumura Co., Ltd., headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, has been striving for a society where people do not have to tolerate the pain of menstruation since the start of the #OneMoreChoice project in 2021. This initiative aims to eliminate the stigma around period-related health issues, allowing employees to express discomfort without hesitation.
Changes in Internal Policy
In April 2022, Tsumura introduced the internal policy named #OneMoreChoice Action, which replaced the term 'menstrual leave' with 'Female Care.' This change not only helped destigmatize menstruation-related absences but also eliminated the age restrictions on coverage for gynecological exams. The policies have expanded significantly, leading to a dramatic increase in both the number of leave days taken and the number of employees utilizing these benefits. Over the past three years, the total number of leave days has increased 3.1 times compared to the previous year, indicating that employees feel more comfortable accessing support.
Innovative Training Programs
Recognizing that understanding and empathy in the workplace are critical, Tsumura has developed an original training program called the #OneMoreChoice Training. This initiative includes experiences that simulate menstrual pain, aimed primarily at male employees to deepen their understanding of the issue. By using a virtual reality (VR) device that replicates menstrual symptoms, the training allows participants to experience firsthand the challenges faced by their female colleagues, fostering an inclusive work environment where everyone can express their struggles without hidden suffering.
In fiscal year 2025, management personnel from Tsumura's production departments in Shizuoka and Ibaraki underwent this training, contributing to a culture that openly acknowledges physical discomfort. Male employees reported that they gained valuable insights about the stress and discomfort associated with menstrual symptoms. Furthermore, organizing group discussions on the often-ignored topic of patience and tolerance has led to an increased understanding of the different ways individuals cope with discomfort.
Continual Improvement in Healthcare Access
The #OneMoreChoice initiative has also increased the uptake of gynecological examinations among Tsumura employees. All employees can now receive these exams free of charge, having abolished age restrictions that previously limited access to certain ages. The result has been a rise in examination rates that exceeds national targets, proving that the awareness campaign surrounding the importance of regular health screenings is effective.
Expansion of the Initiative Beyond Tsumura
Tsumura is committed not only to fostering a supportive environment internally but also to sharing its successes and strategies with a broader audience. The company has participated in seminars organized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Wellness Promotion Committee for Working Women, where it shared insights on promoting understanding of women's health challenges among men.
By advocating for a culture that prioritizes understanding and support during difficult times, Tsumura is paving the way for a future where no one feels they must 'tough it out' alone. The company is continuously working to cultivate a workplace where every employee can thrive without being burdened by stigma.
A Vision for the Future
The #OneMoreChoice project embodies Tsumura's dedication to ensuring that menstruation is no longer something to be endured in silence. As the project evolves, it aims to provide practical alternatives for those who may struggle with discomfort, empowering them to find their own unique solutions. By fostering open dialogue about menstrual and PMS health, Tsumura hopes to create a ripple effect that inspires other companies to adopt similar practices, leading to a healthier, more understanding society for all individuals.
