Exhibition Areas
1.
Isama Area:
Known as one of “Japan’s Most Beautiful Villages,” the Isama area is rich in history and art. It houses the Isama Cultural Creation Facility, the old Gotanda School, and the revered Jiinbo Family Residence, a designated cultural asset. The artistic ambience is further amplified by events, including the annual Isama Studio Film Festival.
2.
Shima Onsen Area:
This historic site has been cherished since the Kamakura period for its healing waters and art. The area’s name traces back to its folklore about curing ailments, and you can enjoy contemporary art exhibits in the historic old school. The enchanting blue of Lake Shima complements the serene beauty of nearby landscapes, setting the stage for artistic exploration.
3.
Kugano Area:
Nature flourishes in the Kugano area, where time feels slower. Important for its traditional architecture, this area reflects a rich past tied to the silk industry. Visitors will discover traditional crafts, such as the unique wooden lunch box called 'menpa' and the intricately woven sandals known as 'konkon-zouri,' embodying the area's historical culture.
Art Insights with Haruna Sato
On the second day, take advantage of Sato’s insights into the artworks she has created for the Biennale. With a theme of evacuation, she explores the historical context of children’s collective evacuation from her hometown during wartime. Sato’s reflections promote not only an understanding of her art but also a poignant conversation about history and memory.
About Haruna Sato:
Graduating from Tama Art University in 2008, Sato has a remarkable exhibition history, showcasing her works at prestigious events globally. Her pieces, including those displayed at the Nakanojo Biennale, push the boundaries of conventional art and storytelling.
Accommodation at Shima Yamaguchi Kan
Your stay will be at Shima Yamaguchi Kan, a traditional ryokan established over 300 years ago. Nestled along the Shima River, guests can enjoy stunning views from the lobby and outdoor baths.
