Celebrating a Decade of Bold Climate Action: CNCA's 10th Anniversary

The Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance (CNCA), an international coalition of cities dedicated to achieving carbon neutrality, marked its 10th anniversary this past week in Glasgow, Scotland. This momentous occasion brought together representatives from 23 global cities that are at the forefront of climate action, demonstrating noteworthy reductions in carbon emissions and leading the way in sustainable urban practices.

Since its inception in 2015, CNCA has aimed to inspire cities to cut their emissions by at least 80% by 2050 or sooner. With new members like Incheon Metropolitan City from South Korea recently joining, CNCA continues to expand its influence and reach across the globe. The alliance's establishment in Brussels in 2024 signifies a robust commitment to comprehensive climate action that transcends local boundaries.

During the anniversary meeting, Simone Mangili, CNCA's executive director, expressed gratitude for the efforts of member cities, emphasizing their unwavering dedication to achieving carbon neutrality ahead of national and global deadlines. 'We are excited to mark a decade of bold climate action,' Mangili stated, noting that the alliance is charting new pathways towards a climate-positive future.

The importance of such collaborations becomes even more critical as many countries express hesitance in meeting their climate goals. In contrast, CNCA member cities are relentlessly pursuing innovative policies that address climate change comprehensively, spanning diverse sectors and communities.

Over the last ten years, CNCA funding has supported numerous innovative projects, totaling 76 awards that constitute an investment surpassing $5 million, which has subsequently attracted an additional $46 million. One of the significant initiatives launched in 2021 is the Game Changer Fund, designed to facilitate pioneering policies that tackle the underlying systems responsible for climate-related crises, such as biodiversity loss and social inequalities.

Projects supported by CNCA include initiatives for biochar production as a method of carbon sequestration, establishing carbon farming markets prioritizing indigenous stewardship, and creating sustainable urban food systems. Additionally, the alliance works to promote renewable energy access and social equity on a global scale.

As CNCA members successfully reach their ambitious climate targets, there's a shift toward addressing harder-to-reach sectors and extending influence beyond city limits to induce meaningful changes in economic frameworks. This progressive approach aims to ensure that climate initiatives benefit communities by enhancing living conditions and addressing historical disparities.

Susan Aitken, the Council Leader of Glasgow City Council, praised CNCA's role, stating, 'The need to build on the broad consensus on the necessity of global climate action has rarely been greater.' She emphasized the importance of practical actions at the city level and the invaluable support that networks like CNCA provide in aligning cities' climate actions and ambitions.

As CNCA celebrates this notable milestone, its ongoing commitment underscores the power of collaboration among urban leaders on the path to a more sustainable future. With the collective knowledge and experiences of its members, CNCA continues to empower cities, fostering cooperative efforts that translate into effective climate action that benefits residents and future generations alike.
