A research team led by Professor Ryo Inoue from the Applied Biological Science Department at Setsunan University has previously found that many student athletes have a higher concentration of harmful bacteria compared to the general population. This imbalance often leads to an accumulation of harmful substances like succinic acid in the gut. The primary culprits behind this issue are typically protein-rich diets and the high-intensity exercises that student athletes engage in, which can lead to oxidative stress in the gut.

The recently published findings highlight the importance of dietary fiber, which is often lacking in athletes' diets due to a focus on proteins and carbohydrates. To counter this, the research team conducted an intervention study targeting the university's rugby players, introducing a diet rich in guaar gum dietary fiber and blackcurrant extract for four weeks. This approach aimed to observe any significant changes in gut health among the participants.

One noteworthy aspect of this study is its rigorous methodology, employing a double-blind trial to eliminate bias. Participants were divided into groups that either consumed the functional foods, a placebo, or a combination of both, ensuring a high level of scientific reliability. Results from the trial indicated that those who consumed either guaar gum or blackcurrant extract saw a significant increase in beneficial gut bacteria like bifidobacteria and Megasphaera, which are known for producing butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid critical for gut health.

These individuals noted substantial improvements in their gut microbiome, marked by a rise in beneficial bacteria that play a role in maintaining gut barrier functions and alleviating succinic acid accumulation.

The study underscores that functional foods such as guaar gum and blackcurrant extract can significantly enhance gut health, particularly among athletes susceptible to gastrointestinal disturbances. This research is crucial not only for rugby players but also for various athletes engaged in high-intensity training.
