FANCL's Innovative Makeup Seminar for the Visually Impaired
On May 29, 2026, FANCL held a significant event in collaboration with the Hyogo Retinitis Pigmentosa Association (JRPS Hyogo) in Kobe City. The makeup seminar was designed for individuals with visual impairments, marking the inaugural collaboration between the two organizations. A total of seven participants were present, each keen to explore their unique identities and learn makeup application techniques.
Embracing Personal Beauty
The seminar commenced with an open discussion, where participants expressed a shared desire to enjoy fashion and learn about makeup despite their visual challenges. Each individual envisioned their best self while actively engaging in practical exercises
from the start. The session began with skincare routines, allowing participants to feel the transformation of their skin as they applied lotion and emulsion. This hands-on experience emphasized the importance of gentle and attentive skincare practices.
Introduction of Tactile Mark Stickers
One of the significant barriers the visually impaired face is distinguishing similar-looking cosmetic containers. To combat this, FANCL introduced the "Touch Mark Sticker," developed alongside visually impaired employees. Unlike traditional braille that may not be easily accessible, these tactile stickers feature unique textures that allow users to identify products by touch. Participants had the opportunity to use these stickers on real products during the seminar.
Utilizing Touch for Makeup Application
Next, the seminar progressed into hands-on makeup application techniques. For the base makeup, a BB cream was utilized, known for combining ample coverage with a natural glow. Participants learned to apply the product while confirming techniques with each other and the facilitators. They then moved on to point makeup, choosing colors that aligned with their desired looks, and discovered how to apply them using only their fingers instead of brushes. With support from staff and guides, participants completed their makeup looks independently.
Joyous Participant Feedback
Feedback from the attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with comments such as, "The finish is exactly how I envisioned it," and "I had always thought eye makeup was difficult, but I’m thrilled I could do it myself." One participant mentioned the convenience of FANCL’s lip color product, "Aqua Serum Rouge," highlighting its audible mechanism that indicated the amount of product dispensed, making it much easier to use without sight.
As the seminar concluded, compliments were exchanged among participants and support members, with everyone sharing smiles and satisfaction.
Future Goals for Empowerment
FANCL is committed to continuing its support for individuals with disabilities and fostering a society where everyone can shine. Their efforts align with a broader vision of promoting diversity and inclusion in beauty and self-expression.
FANCL's Ongoing Initiatives for the Visually Impaired
Since 1988, FANCL has strived towards sustainability and has implemented programs aimed at empowering local communities. Beginning in 2013, they initiated seminars specifically for supporting those with visual impairments. Many participants experience gradual vision loss, which may lead them to abandon their interest in fashion and makeup, risking isolation at home. The goal of these seminars is not only to teach makeup but also to encourage social interaction and self-confidence while enjoying physical appearance.
Development of Touch Mark Stickers
The unique Touch Mark Sticker was designed to help users distinguish between products that might otherwise be challenging to identify. The stickers are easy to read and can be affixed by the user wherever they find it most suitable. This initiative involved valuable input from visually impaired employees to ensure its effectiveness.
Awards and Recognition
FANCL's commitment to accessibility is evident in its accolades, including the Encouragement Award from the Cabinet Office during the Barrier-Free and Universal Design Promotion Recognition Ceremony in December 2019, acknowledging their contributions to supporting visually impaired individuals in makeup.
In a world where every individual deserves the chance to express their beauty, FANCL continues to lead the charge, making it possible for everyone to embrace their unique identities and shine.
