Launching Happy with Autism: A Crowdfunding Initiative
In an inspiring effort aimed at promoting happiness among individuals on the autism spectrum, the NPO Tokyo Autism Association, led by Director Masaharu Sugiyama, has announced the launch of a crowdfunding campaign to support the "Happy with Autism" project. This initiative seeks to foster a deeper understanding of autism and create a supportive environment for those affected by it. The crowdfunding campaign starts on February 26, with a target of 600,000 yen to support ongoing awareness activities leading up to World Autism Awareness Day, which is celebrated on April 2.
Raising Awareness and Understanding
As the world prepares for World Autism Awareness Day, various activities are being organized globally to raise awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a condition that can be difficult to recognize based only on appearances. In Japan, recent reports have highlighted growing concerns about the stigma surrounding developmental disabilities, as well as increasing rejection rates for disability pensions. Misleading statements suggesting that the root of developmental disorders lies in parent-child relationships have further exacerbated misunderstandings. As a response to these urgent challenges, the Tokyo Autism Association has prioritized community awareness and education through the "Happy with Autism" project.
The project website will serve as a hub for sharing information related to World Autism Awareness Day and continuing awareness campaigns throughout the year. A key highlight of this initiative will be a gathering at Tokyo Tower on April 2, where interviews with individuals on the spectrum and their families will be conducted. The goal is to create a video that captures and shares their voices with a wider audience.
The Crowdfunding Initiative
To ensure the successful launch and management of the "Happy with Autism" platform, the Tokyo Autism Association is turning to the community for support. With a set goal of 600,000 yen, funds raised through the crowdfunding campaign will be allocated for various expenses: 1) development of the autism awareness platform, 2) costs for printing flyers to promote events, 3) production of interview and event videos, and 4) expenses for carrying out the Tokyo Tower event.
Individuals and organizations that contribute will have their names displayed on the project site as a token of appreciation for their support.

A Message from Yoko Yoshida
Yoko Yoshida, Vice-Director of the Tokyo Autism Association and crowdfunding coordinator, shares her personal journey. Her son, who was diagnosed with ASD and an intellectual disability at three, recently turned 30. Reflecting on her experiences, Yoshida recalls the fear and uncertainty she faced as a parent navigating early intervention options. Through the support of the Tokyo Autism Association, she found a community that empowered her and helped shift her perspective on autism to recognize both the challenges and joys it brings.
Yoshida emphasizes the importance of supporting families and individuals facing difficulties due to ASD, highlighting that having autism does not equate to a life of unhappiness.
Short Films to Inspire Change
As part of the project, the Tokyo Autism Association is committed to creating short films that share the authentic stories of individuals with autism. Scheduled for release in 2025, these videos will explore topics such as the meaning of autism and the hopes and dreams of those on the spectrum. The aim is to highlight the diversity within the autism community and foster a culture of acceptance and support.
On April 2, during the event at Tokyo Tower, participants will be invited to share their thoughts about the challenges they face and what they wish the world understood about autism. The insights gathered will be compiled into a compelling visual narrative, which will be made available on the official project website.
Join us on April 2 at Tokyo Tower and become a voice for those who need support and recognition. Your contributions can help pave the way for a world where happiness is attainable for everyone, regardless of their differences.
