Dr. Sultan Al Jaber Unveils World's First 24/7 Renewable Energy Project.

In a groundbreaking announcement during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2025, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, unveiled the world's very first 24/7 renewable energy storage project. This initiative represents an unprecedented leap in sustainable energy solutions, aiming to provide uninterrupted electricity on a large scale.

The project's essence is rooted in addressing the historical challenge of energy intermittency, which has long plagued renewable energy sectors worldwide. Understanding that renewable sources like solar and wind cannot consistently provide energy around the clock, this ambitious project seeks to overcome that barrier. It partners 5.2 gigawatts of photovoltaic solar panels with 19 gigawatt-hours of battery storage capacity. This innovative combination is expected to generate one gigawatt of reliable, clean energy 24 hours a day, allowing for continuous, base-load renewable energy generation.

Dr. Al Jaber emphasized the critical juncture the world finds itself at, which he describes as the 'nexus of next.' He called for unity among stakeholders, industry leaders, and governments to pursue a singular path for sustainable economic growth. The shift towards renewable energy, he suggests, is not just a matter of environmental necessity but also an opportunity for unprecedented economic growth.

As global megatrends such as the exponential growth in artificial intelligence and the expanding markets of emerging economies drastically increase electricity demands—from 9,000 gigawatts projected for 2035 to a staggering 35,000 gigawatts by 2050—Dr. Al Jaber asserted that existing energy policies must pivot to embrace a diverse array of energy options. He cautioned against premature regulations that limit energy sources, stressing that sustainability and energy development are not opposing forces but are instead allied in the quest for a more prosperous future.

The newly introduced XRG initiative will focus on meeting the rising energy needs throughout the value chain, integrating sources such as natural gas, low-carbon fuels, and essential infrastructure. This multidimensional approach aims to enhance energy security while ensuring that clean, affordable energy access is extended to those still lacking it, especially in regions where a billion people remain without access to reliable power.

Highlighting the importance of placing human welfare at the heart of progress, Dr. Al Jaber underscored the motivational role of the Zayed Sustainability Prize in encouraging initiatives that benefit everyday lives across the globe—whether it's through accessible clean water or educational facilities powered by renewable energy.

As he concluded his remarks at ADSW 2025, Dr. Al Jaber reiterated the urgent need for innovative thinking that reconciles energy access with sustainability. He firmly stated: 'For too long, we have been trapped in a false dichotomy of energy access versus sustainability—this mindset paralyzes progress. It's time to shift the discourse. Energy and sustainable development are not opposing avenues; they are essential partners in creating a new path forward.'

The excitement surrounding this project reflects not just a local commitment in Abu Dhabi but a significant stride toward global energy transformation. As countries and industries await the impacts of this pioneering endeavor, the world stands at a pivotal moment, ready to embrace the future of energy with optimism and innovation.
