Palma School Celebrates the Unveiling of the New Edward M. Dowd Gymnasium

Palma School Celebrates Renovated Edward M. Dowd Gymnasium

On August 22, 2025, Palma School in Salinas, California, marked a monumental occasion with the dedication of the newly renovated Edward M. Dowd Gymnasium. This renovation was made possible by a generous gift of $2.5 million from the Edward M. Dowd Foundation, representing the largest single donation in the school’s 74-year history.

This pivotal gift comes at a transformative time for Palma School. Founded in 1951, the institution initially welcomed students of all genders but transitioned to an all-male model in 1964. With the planned return to coeducation in 2024, the renovation of the gym signifies not just a physical enhancement of the campus but also a meaningful symbol of Palma’s evolving identity.

Chris Dalman, the president of Palma School, expressed the significance of the renovation: "We tell our students that everything here is a gift. The Edward M. Dowd Gymnasium is now one of our greatest gifts—one they will cherish, care for, and one day, when possible, pay forward." The gym will be instrumental in helping students create lasting memories, build character, and foster a sense of community.

The rejuvenated Edward M. Dowd Gymnasium stands as a beacon of excellence and inclusion, thoughtfully designed to accommodate the diverse needs of Palma's expanding coeducational student body. Dalman remarked, "Palma's gym never sleeps! It has been the heart of our campus for decades—hosting practices, championships, dances, rallies, graduations, and moments that shape who our students become. To now hear young women's voices competing, laughing, and cheering 'Go Palma' is our new reality, and we are better for it."

The renovation not only enhances the physical space but also resonates deeply with the values embodied by Edward M. Dowd, whose legacy is rooted in persistence, service, and generosity. Jim Dowd, president and CEO of the Edward M. Dowd Foundation, reminisced about his father’s life lessons learned during military service, which shaped his journey through life and exemplified his success.

This development is a crucial chapter in Palma School’s larger initiative, known as Palma Rising, which aims to modernize athletic facilities with a $12 million fundraising campaign. This campaign includes plans for a new athletic performance center spanning 9,500 square feet and enhancing additional sports opportunities for all students.

The Edward M. Dowd Foundation remains committed to advancing education, health, and various social causes that aim to make a lasting impact in the community. Founded by the self-made philanthropist Edward M. Dowd, the foundation continues to uphold his legacy of generosity and dedication to service.

As Palma School celebrates this milestone, the reopening of the Edward M. Dowd Gymnasium signifies more than just renovated infrastructure—it is a testament to the school's commitment to its students and a promise of a bright, inclusive future. The gym will serve not only as a hub for athletic endeavors but also as a space where memories will be forged, friendships will blossom, and the spirit of Palma will thrive for generations to come.
