Introduction of PntGuard™
On October 31, 2025, Tschudi Shipping Company, NAL Research, and SGM Technology AS proudly launched
PntGuard™, an innovative maritime security solution designed to provide a reliable overview of vessel positioning even when GNSS signals are compromised. As the maritime sector faces growing concerns about GNSS spoofing and jamming, PntGuard™ emerges as a critical tool for navigational integrity.
Addressing the Escalating Threat of Electronic Warfare
The malicious disruption of GNSS/GPS signals is a rapidly growing concern within the maritime industry. Threats may arise from land-based systems, hostile ships, or even unexpected interruptions in heavily trafficked waterways, often without crews being aware that their positional data has been manipulated. These disruptions are now classified as strategic threats, capable of inflicting severe physical, economic, and legal damage.
Using inexpensive equipment to manipulate GNSS/GPS signals, attackers can mislead vessels miles away from their actual location, generate false AIS tracks, and trigger system errors on the bridge, jeopardizing crew safety. The potential risks associated with such threats include:
- - Collisions and groundings, especially in poor visibility conditions at night or in busy waterways, endangering lives, property, and the environment.
- - Unintentional or manipulated intrusions into prohibited waters.
- - Claims of circumventing sanctions or entering ports in sanctioned states.
- - Disruptions in cargo logistics leading to delays, increased fuel consumption, and emissions.
- - Charter disputes and insurance complications owing to ships exceeding compliance limits.
At the highest levels of the maritime industry, there are mounting concerns, prompting major marine insurers to advocate for immediate measures to secure operational stability.
Plug-and-Play Simplicity
Equipped with industry-leading Assured Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (APNT) technology, PntGuard™ stands out as the most robust solution available. Most current solutions merely alert users of GNSS/GPS disturbances without providing an alternative authenticated positioning system. Thanks to the Iridium® satellite network operating in low earth orbit (LEO), PntGuard™ receives a secure PNT signal that is approximately 1,000 times stronger than GNSS/GPS and resistant to jamming and manipulation.
This innovative system enhances existing navigational data by delivering precise positional information and immediately alerts crews to any manipulations or interruptions. PntGuard™ features a straightforward installation process, consisting of two compact components: an above-deck unit connected to the Iridium PNT service, and a below-deck unit that displays both the false GPS position and the vessel's actual location in real-time on a nautical chart.
Assurance of Safety, Compliance, and Evidence on Demand
Many crews may remain oblivious to the fact that they are under manipulation until it is too late. PntGuard™ provides a crucial insight, enabling teams to respond swiftly and navigate confidently. Coastal offices can access accurate records of a vessel's actual position at any time—documentation that can be shared with charterers or insurers to counter claims due to erroneous data, thereby protecting revenue and reputation.
Employing the same technology that empowers APNT solutions across various critical infrastructures, including telecommunications, data centers, and utilities, PntGuard™ has proven its capabilities for maritime use through extensive sea trials with leading international shipping companies, as part of a pilot program conducted with DNK from Norway, one of the world’s foremost marine war risk insurers, and independent evaluations over two consecutive years in jamming tests in Andøya, Norway.
Affordability and Adaptability
PntGuard™ is now available for deployment across various fleet sizes, providing immediate protection against an invisible and escalating threat. For more information, visit
