Celebrating 25 Years of National Soul Food Month: A Culinary Journey through Heritage and Community
National Soul Food Month Celebrates 25 Years
June 2026 marks a significant milestone for National Soul Food Month®, as it celebrates its 25th Anniversary with a range of cultural, culinary, and educational activities. This month-long celebration, founded by Charla L. Draper in 2001, honors the rich traditions, history, and cultural impact of soul food within the African American community and the broader African diaspora.
The 25th Anniversary is a testament to the hard work of countless chefs, restaurateurs, and families who have kept the soul food traditions alive for generations. Throughout June, Chicago will be at the heart of these celebrations, recognizing 25 exceptional soul food restaurants, highlighting their contributions to preserving this pivotal part of American cuisine.
Celebratory Events
The festivities will kick off with a special Chicago Heritage Bus Tour on June 4, 2026, led by urban historian Dilla Thomas. This tour will guide participants through the neighborhoods and historical landmarks that are key to understanding the cultural fabric of Black history and food in America.
In addition to the bus tour, the month includes various culinary experiences, workshops, and heritage programming. For example, award-winning baker Stephanie Hart of Brown Sugar Bakery, the only African American female chocolate manufacturer in the U.S., will lead a chocolate tasting event titled "Life is Sweet with Chocolate." This experience will connect participants with cocoa farmers from West Africa, emphasizing the international and historical ties that soul food embodies.
Another exciting event is "Beyond the Backyard Burger" on June 25, where acclaimed chef Dominique Leach will showcase his innovative cooking techniques and provide attendees with fresh ideas for summer gatherings. From spatchcocking a turkey to preparing soul-inspired light bites, the menu promises to celebrate the essence of family-friendly gatherings.
Finally, on June 27, the month-long activities will culminate with an archival recipe workshop at the Gary Comer Youth Center. Noted food consultant Karen M. Wilcher will guide participants in documenting and preserving family recipes and stories, ensuring that the culinary traditions of the past are passed down to future generations.
