Hiroshima Peace Piano Concert: "Messages to the Future 2025"
On August 10, 2025, the Hiroshima Peace Piano Concert, titled "Messages to the Future 2025", will take place at Tsutsuji Hall in Nerima Cultural Center, Tokyo. This special concert, organized by Voisuke Co., Ltd. and led by Akiko Iijima, promises an array of performances that resonate with themes of peace and remembrance.
This concert is particularly significant as it marks 80 years since the end of World War II, providing a poignant reminder of the importance of peace and the scars left by war. Attendees will experience unique readings and music performed on a special piano that survived the atomic bombing in Hiroshima, offering a powerful message of hope and resilience.
The concert will feature the acclaimed work "Judging the Atomic Bomb", written by renowned poet Shuntaro Tanikawa and performed by the talented Ken Sakakida (soprano), Yoko Ishii (piano), and the Japanese biwa player, Tsukisui Kuroda. The stellar cast also includes other accomplished artists such as Akiko Iijima and Ichisei Koiso for readings, along with the Clark Memorial International High School Choir and the Nerima Children’s Choir.
Also highlighting the performance will be Kaname Aoi, the 2024 Whistling World Champion, and Hiroshi Goto, a film director, who will share their talents and insights during the event. What makes this concert even more remarkable is the involvement of Michinori Yagawa, the piano tuner who helped restore the bomb-damaged piano to its original sound. This connection emphasizes the enduring spirit of collaboration and creativity that transcends tragedy.
The surviving piano, once silenced by the tragedy of war, was restored by Yagawa, who helped to revive its beautiful tone, symbolizing resilience and renewal. The 2025 concert represents not just a celebration of music but a dedication to remembering the past while looking forward to the future.
