From Struggling Student to Dome Artist: Ryuto Kazuhara’s Inspiring Photo Essay

Ryuto Kazuhara’s Inspiring Journey in Photo Essay

On July 1st, 2025, Ryuto Kazuhara's first-ever photo essay titled "Follow Me" makes its electronic debut. This work is a heartfelt portrayal of his journey from a boy who struggled with academics to becoming a celebrated dome artist. After its initial print release last August, the book has seen remarkable success, reaching its third printing, and is now available in digital format for fans and new readers alike.

"Follow Me" delves deep into the life of Kazuhara, the vocalist of the popular group GENERATIONS. Through this book, he shares his unique narrative, filled with moments of challenge and growth. The essay recounts his frustrations during his school years, particularly during the auditions for the J SOUL BROTHERS and the hustle leading up to GENERATIONS' debut. It also captures personal stories, including a cathartic moment while gazing over the stadium from the dome, ultimately coming to terms with his relationship with his father.

The photo essay is not merely a collection of images; it is a rich tapestry woven together with over 230 photographs and a text exceeding 70,000 words. This meticulous work required a three-year concept phase and a full year dedicated to shooting, underscoring how seriously Kazuhara approached this project. For those who have yet to read this story that intertwines his struggles with aspirations, now is an excellent opportunity. For those who have already enjoyed the physical version, having the digital copy means that you can revisit his remarkable journey anytime, complete with stunning visuals.

In his own words, Kazuhara reflects, “I’m thrilled that my photo essay 'Follow Me' is now available as an e-book. I’ve heard that many have already picked it up. I initially couldn't see myself releasing a photo book, but this format allows me to encapsulate my hobbies. Perhaps my story could encourage someone else to make a significant decision.” His openness about his life’s rollercoaster rides fills him with joy, knowing that it resonates with readers.

A recent trip back to California brought back memories of his photo essay. Kazuhara notes, “I've always struggled with my studies and feel I've caused my parents trouble. However, I never lied about my passions. By pursuing what I love, I’ve been blessed to work as an artist.” Despite having many hobbies, music remains his greatest love.

As Kazuhara continues to explore the vast world around him, he is determined to keep challenging himself and encourages everyone to “follow along” on his journey.

The photo essay is published by Kodansha and features both photography and writing by Takaharu Sue and Yoko Kikuchi respectively. For those interested, it’s available at this link.
