Huawei ICT Competition 2024-2025 Final Highlights AI's Role in Education Transformation

The global finale of the Huawei ICT Competition 2024-2025 unfolded in Shenzhen, China, marking a remarkable achievement in its ninth iteration. This year's event drew participation from over 210,000 students and educators hailing from more than 2,000 tertiary institutions across over 100 countries and regions, demonstrating the competition's expanding reach and prominence. After engaging in rigorous national and regional competitions, a total of 179 teams from 48 different nations advanced to the global finals, highlighting the competitive spirit and innovation in the ICT sector.

During the prestigious awards ceremony, held today, exceptional teams from various countries were recognized for their accomplishments in three major categories: practical skills, innovation, and programming. Notably, eighteen outstanding teams from nine countries - including China, Algeria, Brazil, the Philippines, Morocco, Nigeria, Serbia, Tanzania, and Singapore - received accolades for their performance.

The Grand Prize for the innovation competition was awarded to teams from the University of Bulacan State in the Philippines, Beijing University of Technology in China, Technical Sciences Faculty of Cacak from the University of Kragujevac in Serbia, and the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of Errachidia from Moulay Ismail University in Morocco. In the networking segment of the practical competition, top honors went to teams from Shenzhen Information Technology Institute (China), Federal Institute of Tocantins (Brazil), Federal University of Technology in Minna (Nigeria), and a collaborative team from Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology, University of Dar es Salaam, and University of Dodoma (Tanzania).

For the cloud segment, the top teams included those from iACADEMY in the Philippines, Batna 2 University and National School of Computer Science in Algeria, Tianjin University of Technology and Education in China, and Singapore University of Social Sciences. Meanwhile, in the computing aspect of the practical competition, prizes were awarded to teams from Guilin University of Electronic Technology (China), Federal University of Technology in Minna (Nigeria), University of Bejaia and National School of Computer Science in Algeria, and Cebu Institute of Technology in the Philippines. The Grand Prize for the programming competition went to a team from Shenzhen Polytechnic in China.

Beyond merely highlighting technical excellence, the competition also aimed to reward exceptional contributions that extend into the realms of social impact. The 'Women in Tech' award recognized four all-female teams from Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Germany, and Kenya for their groundbreaking efforts. The 'Green Development' award was embraced by a team from Ghana, while the 'Most Valuable Teacher' accolade honored 18 exceptional educators from ten countries—including China, Algeria, Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Nigeria, Hungary, and Turkey—for their contributions to ICT education.

In remarks made during his opening speech, Ritchie Peng, Director of Huawei’s ICT Strategy and Business Development department, articulated the competition's evolving nature. He expressed, “Our goal is to learn and inspire innovation through competition. We continuously adapt the competition's topics to align with our vision for an intelligent world by 2030. We encourage students to grasp the intricacies of cloud computing, big data, and AI so they can drive social progress.”

As the digital transformation accelerates globally, the demand for skilled professionals in fields such as AI, big data, and cybersecurity is surging. However, a noticeable talent shortage in these crucial domains has emerged, prompting Huawei's ICT Competition to implement several initiatives including practice, innovation, and programming divisions, alongside industry-academic collaborations and tailored academic programs. These initiatives are designed to equip students with in-demand skills and cultivate the next wave of technology talents capable of excelling in an increasingly intelligent and digital world.

This year’s competition also featured the AI Accelerating Education Transformation Summit, where experts converged to discuss the pivotal role of AI in smart education. Huawei also announced the launch of the AI Capability of the Huawei ICT Academy Intelligent Platform, aimed at enhancing the efficiency and accessibility for educators and students alike.
