Helsinki Launches the World's First Dog-Centric Sightseeing Tour
Helsinki, known as the happiest capital globally, recently made headlines with the launch of an unprecedented sightseeing tour tailored specifically for our furry friends. Over the weekend, more than 1,000 dogs, accompanied by their owners, attended the grand unveiling of The Doggy Route to Happiness. This pioneering tour not only showcases some of the city’s most iconic landmarks but also celebrates the special bond between humans and their canine companions.
The Doggy Route to Happiness includes various attractions, most notably the Stickelius Monument, a whimsical tribute to the renowned Sibelius Monument, but tailored to canine dimensions. This monument was carefully designed to reflect the original monument's proportions on a 14:1 scale. Under the artistic guidance of Neris, a local rescue dog famous for his stick-collecting prowess, the Stickelius Monument has quickly become a favorite among visitors.
The event coincided with the World Dog Show 2025, further enhancing its appeal and significance. Dogs eagerly lined up to explore the designated path, stopping for portraits at a picturesque photography spot. The upbeat atmosphere was contagious, with many owners sharing their delight at this unique opportunity to bond with their pets in a historic context.
Not far from the Stickelius Monument, visitors could enjoy Café Dogatta, a pop-up café designed to cater specifically to dogs. This “pup-up” space, situated next to the beloved Café Regatta, offers a perfect break for dogs after their city exploration. One of the major highlights of the route is Rajasaari Island, an exclusive dog-only destination located in the heart of Helsinki's maritime area. This enchanting island, which is open round-the-clock, features sprawling forests, sandy beaches, and calm waters perfect for dogs to enjoy. The proximity to notable Finnish figures like the President and Prime Minister jogging with their dogs adds an extra charm.
Helsinki’s commitment to pets is evident across the city, with over 90 dedicated dog parks and beaches, specifically designed to provide recreational spaces for dogs and their owners. Moreover, the city embraces canine culture in various everyday settings. Dogs are welcomed in numerous shops, cafés, and restaurants, some even offering special menu items designed with our four-legged friends in mind. Public transportation is also dog-friendly, allowing these cherished pets to travel at no cost.
Soila Lehkonen, the Head of Brand PR in Helsinki Partners, expressed the importance of this initiative: “Pets boost happiness. This time, we wanted to bring attractions to some of the city's most beloved outdoor spots – places that both dog owners and their dogs can enjoy together. It’s heartwarming to see so many experiences crafted from a dog’s point of view.”
While enjoying its rich urban culture, vibrant natural beauty, and active lifestyle, Helsinki asserts itself as a true paradise for pets and their human companions. The latest initiative, the Doggy Route to Happiness, illustrates that joy in Helsinki isn’t just reserved for humans but extends to all residents, whether they walk on two legs or four.
As this unique sightseeing route gains popularity, it paints a broader picture of Helsinki's dedication to fostering joy and inclusiveness. With its array of dog-centric attractions, the city not only embraces its furry residents but also reinforces its status as one of the happiest places on Earth.
In conclusion, Helsinki's innovative approach in providing joy to both its human and canine residents may be a reflection of the bond that pets create in enhancing our lives. Perhaps in a world full of constant change, the love and companionship of dogs are integral to why the Finns enjoy their title of being the happiest people globally.
