Exciting Return of the ExxonMobil Theater District Open House

The Houston Theater District is thrilled to announce the return of the ExxonMobil Theater District Open House, set to take place on Monday, March 9, 2026. This much-anticipated event promises a full day of free performances, interactive workshops, and exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the city's acclaimed venues, making it a perfect outing for families and arts enthusiasts alike.

Building on the success of its 2025 relaunch, which attracted nearly 7,500 visitors, this year’s Open House aims to further spotlight the dynamic arts scene in Houston. As Executive Director Craig Hauschildt stated, “Houston serves as one of the nation’s great performing arts hubs, and we’re excited to throw the doors wide open for everyone.” The event is made possible thanks to the generous support from ExxonMobil, the title sponsor, enhancing community access to artistic experiences.

A Day of Artistic Exploration

The Open House presents an incredible opportunity for attendees to explore various artistic expressions showcased by Houston’s vibrant theater district. From engaging performances to hands-on arts experiences, there will be something for everyone, regardless of age.

Visitors will have the chance to participate in:
  • - Interactive Workshops: Engage with art forms through family-friendly workshops hosted by experts, such as Performing Arts Houston, which features interactive sessions with Ailey Arts in Education Teaching Artists.
  • - Backstage Tours: Walk behind the scenes of iconic venues and discover the magic that happens away from the spotlight. Houston Grand Opera will even allow guests to participate in an energetic performance titled Music-Stories-OPERA! at the Wortham Center.
  • - Captivating Performances: Enjoy excerpts from beloved ballets like Sleeping Beauty, performed by Houston Ballet II, and exhilarating jazz and chamber music presented by DACAMERA.
  • - Hands-On Activities: Seek out creative experiences like an instrument petting zoo, face painting, and much more, designed to inspire the inner artist in everyone.

The day culminates with a free concert by the Houston Symphony, enriching the community's experience and celebrating the power of live orchestral music.

The Spirit of Houston

The ExxonMobil Theater District Open House is more than just an event; it embodies Houston’s commitment to arts and culture. The participating organizations and sponsors demonstrate a collective effort to foster a vibrant $1.3 billion annual arts economy, showcasing the diverse talents and cultural offerings in the area.

“This event isn’t just a part of Houston; it’s part of family histories, too,” remarked Hauschildt. Many families who attended in the past are now returning with children, continuing traditions built on shared experiences in the arts.

The 2026 Open House will also feature performances and activities curated by various local arts organizations that contribute to the richness of Houston's cultural landscape. Preparing for an exciting day, opening ceremonies will be hosted at Lynn Wyatt Square, showcasing the diverse programming and artists from the Theater District.

Meg Booth, Chair of the Houston Theater District Board of Directors, elaborated on the event’s significance by stating, “The variety of theaters, performing arts organizations, and cultural diversity is on display and completely free for guests of all ages.”
