Yuan Xikun Commemorates Drug Detection Dog with Stunning Sculpture

Commemorating Canine Heroes: Yuan Xikun's Tribute to Jijunxing

In a remarkable ceremony held at the Beijing Jintai Art Museum, renowned Chinese artist Yuan Xikun unveiled a poignant sculpture honoring the heroic narcotics detection dog Jijunxing, affectionately known as Niuniu. This tribute comes in recognition of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a day observed globally to raise awareness about drug-related issues and the importance of combating illicit drugs.

Yuan Xikun, acclaimed for his contributions to environmental advocacy through art, expressed immeasurable respect for the sacrifices made by both humans and canine partners in the relentless fight against drugs. Speaking at the unveiling, he remarked, "For 185 years, China's resolve to combat drugs, safeguarding public welfare, national dignity, and progress, remains unrelenting. This sculpture honors all frontline defenders, human and canine, who shield society from the scourge of drugs."

Jijunxing, a Belgian Malinois, devoted her eight-year career to the Dehong Border Management Detachment in Yunnan province. Her commendable service included assisting in the resolution of 137 criminal cases, the apprehension of 66 suspects, and the detection of over 80 kilograms of illegal substances. These achievements earned her multiple national accolades, particularly in 2003 when she was officially recognized as one of the first-ever "Meritorious Dogs" by the National Immigration Administration.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by Zhou Zhou, Jijunxing's handler, who emphasized the deeper significance of the art piece. "This transcends art – it stands as an enduring symbol of spirit," he stated while introducing the sculpture. "It will inspire all handlers and detection dogs to serve our sacred anti-drug cause with heightened resolve and excellence. Its presence embodies our unswerving commitment – loyal guardianship without fail and relentless dedication to our mission."

Yuan Xikun's artistic vision is informed by his belief in interconnectedness, a theme that resonates through his body of work. This sculpture of Jijunxing isn't his first portrayal of working dogs; he has expressed a long-standing interest in showcasing the vital roles that these animals play beyond mere companions. In his words, "From search-and-rescue missions to narcotics detection and intercepting wildlife trafficking, these dogs serve as humanity's unspoken allies. They guard human lives, property, and the integrity of our ecosystems – silent partners in preserving biological security for all species."

In addition to honoring Jijunxing, Yuan's work serves as a platform to advocate for animal welfare. He highlighted that the dedication exhibited by canine heroes compels humanity to advance protections for animals and deepen the legal frameworks that support their welfare.

Yuan Xikun is celebrated not only for his artistic talents but also for his commitment to raising awareness about environmental protection through art. He has received numerous awards and honorary medals from various international organizations, reflecting his status as a prominent advocate for conservation. His latest creation stands as a testament to his unwavering belief that "using art to serve environmental protection is not only an artist's responsibility but also an inseparable part of the pursuit of noble art."

Adding a musical layer to the event, prominent music producer Qing Shan, the grandnephew of the composer of China’s national anthem, Nie Er, composed a moving piece titled Silent Partner. This tribute was inspired by the unveiling of Yuan Xikun's sculpture, further shedding light on the emotional and symbolic importance of this dedication.

Grace Ge Gabriel, Senior Advisor for Asia Affairs at the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), also encapsulated the spirit of the occasion, stating, "Master Yuan Xikun has pioneered the fusion of art and conservation. His tribute to Jijunxing powerfully reminds us that humans and animals share a common destiny. These silent guardians deserve our deepest respect and protection. When we uphold the dignity of animals, we build a more compassionate world for all."
