Transforming Uncertainty into Value at Osaka Station
On April 20, 2026, a notable event unfolded at Osaka Station, where the LBMA Japan, in conjunction with JR West Consultants, held an innovative ideation session focused on transforming uncertainties associated with station experiences into tangible value. The culmination of efforts from an alliance of 118 companies aimed to leverage location data for marketing and service initiatives, showcasing a forward-thinking approach to the evolving landscape of transport infrastructure.
An impressive array of participants joined the discussion, including representatives from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau, and Ritsumeikan University's Faculty of Information Science and Engineering. Together with organizations from various sectors, they gathered to explore potential business models using the newly developed Osaka Station 3D map.
This innovative 3D map serves as a vital tool to simplify the complex navigation of Osaka Station, making it accessible for both locals and tourists. During the event, 50 attendees from 22 organizations engaged in brainstorming sessions to generate proactive business ideas that would enhance user interaction and operational efficiency at the station. The discussions were split into six groups, each tasked with generating distinct proposals, which were later evaluated for their creativity and viability.
Award-Winning Ideas
Two standout ideas were awarded excellence:
1.
“Oshi Marketing” - This concept focuses on engaging station visitors through targeted marketing strategies that resonate with their interests and preferences, potentially creating a more personalized experience.
2.
“Mechanisms to Access the Map” - This initiative aims to enhance user accessibility, ensuring visitors can effortlessly locate and utilize the 3D map features to navigate the station effectively.
The event highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving innovation that cannot be accomplished by a single entity. The essence of LBMA Japan's motto, “Co-creation—Innovations and monetization that cannot be realized alone,” was evident throughout the discussions as attendees explored solutions to better implement location-based data services throughout Japan’s train stations.
Looking forward, LBMA Japan is set to pursue various business endeavors based on the outcomes of this event. Plans include expansion beyond Osaka Station to airports and train stations across the country, fostering new opportunities in the location data business.
