Okayama University Hosts OKAMUN 2026: A Mock UN Experience for Students

OKAMUN 2026: Bridging Global Perspectives

On June 15 and June 29, 2026, Okayama University, along with Notre Dame Seishin University, hosted the highly anticipated OKAMUN 2026 (Okayama Model United Nations). This event took place at two key venues: Notre Dame Seishin University on June 15, and the KIBINOVE (Co-Creation Innovation Lab) at Okayama University's Tsushima Campus on June 29. Approximately 50 students from both universities gathered to take part in this enriching experience.

What is a Mock UN?

Model UN is a simulated activity that allows participants to take on the roles of ambassadors representing different countries, engaging in discussions and negotiations about international issues. This educational initiative aims to deepen understanding of global challenges while enhancing skills such as language proficiency, negotiation techniques, logical reasoning, and discussion prowess. The ultimate goal is to cultivate international communication capabilities among students.

Themes of OKAMUN 2026

This year’s event focused on crucial themes such as:
  • - Protecting women and girls from gender-based violence
  • - Promoting women’s economic participation
  • - Ensuring women's involvement in political decisions and peace-building processes

As representatives of various countries, participants engaged in meaningful debates and negotiations, articulating their nation's perspectives on these significant issues. This interaction provided a platform for students to express their views while also learning from their peers.

Practical Learning Experience

The OKAMUN 2026 event served as a preparatory opportunity for students who are planning to participate in the Japan University English Model United Nations (JUEMUN), scheduled for July. Additionally, students not taking part in JUEMUN participated as journalists and reporters, covering the proceedings of the Model UN meetings and later working on news videos to showcase their experiences.

Through this activity, participants not only expanded their understanding of Model UN but also had a chance to reflect on international issues actively. The collaborative environment allowed them to develop critical thinking skills while fostering a commitment to addressing global challenges.

KIBINOVE: The Innovative Venue

The Co-Creation Innovation Lab (KIBINOVE) at Okayama University, where the event was held, provided a state-of-the-art facility that encouraged creativity and innovation among the participants. This unique space is dedicated to collaborative projects and serves as a hub for students and researchers alike to work on solutions that impact society.

In conclusion, OKAMUN 2026 not only provided a hands-on learning experience for students but also served as a reminder of the importance of collaborative dialogue in solving world issues. As participants left the event, they carried with them new insights and a deeper understanding of their roles as future global citizens, ready to take on the challenges of tomorrow.
