SoCalGas Achieves Record Low Damage Rate Thanks to 811 Awareness Campaign

SoCalGas Celebrates Record 811 Participation

Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas), a subsidiary of Sempra, proudly acknowledges National 811 Day by announcing a remarkable achievement: the lowest infrastructure damage rate in its history, which underscores the significance of safe digging practices. In 2025, over 1.1 million Californians contacted 811 to locate underground utility lines across the expansive SoCalGas service territory, marking a noteworthy 6% increase from the previous year. This participation level not only set records but also played a pivotal role in preventing damage to critical utility infrastructure.

The surge in calls to the 811 service directly correlates with the company's record-low damage rate, illustrating how safe digging practices can profoundly impact community safety and the protection of essential utility services. Since 2019, the rate of excavation-related incidents has decreased by 32%, showcasing the effectiveness of public awareness campaigns, collaboration among residents, contractors, local agencies, and utilities.

Cedric Williams, chief safety officer at SoCalGas, expressed the positive impact of rising 811 call numbers. "The increasing number of people taking the vital step of contacting 811 before digging shows a collective effort in reducing underground infrastructure damage and enhancing community safety. National 811 Day is a celebratory occasion for this progress, serving as a reminder that every dig-in incident is preventable."

Despite a substantial drop in damage rates, nearly 60% of dig-in incidents in 2025 stemmed from failure to call 811 before excavation activities began. Data consistently reveal that contacting 811 significantly lowers the risk of damaging underground utilities. Interestingly, about 70% of these incidents occurred on private property, emphasizing the necessity for homeowners to reach out to 811 before engaging in common projects such as landscaping, tree planting, or fence installation.

August 11th is observed as National 811 Day each year, prompting individuals to notify 811 at least two business days prior to any digging endeavors. Utility operators then mark the approximate locations of underground utility lines, a crucial step that aids in preventing injuries, property damage, and costly repairs. The success in reducing damage rates reflects SoCalGas's broader commitment to safety and excellence in managing energy infrastructure across Southern California.

For those planning projects—whether planting trees, building decks, or landscaping—SoCalGas encourages making the call to 811 the first action taken before breaking ground. This simple but essential step can lead to safer homes and communities.
