HASEKO Summer Riko Challenge 2026: An Engaging Experience in Architecture and Sound

Experience Innovation: HASEKO Summer Riko Challenge 2026

In an initiative to inspire young minds, HASEKO Corporation, based in Minato, Tokyo, hosted the HASEKO Summer Riko Challenge 2026. This event, held on August 24 and 31, was organized in collaboration with the Cabinet Office's Gender Equality Bureau. Its purpose was to support female students in their exploration of career options within the science and engineering fields.

The HASEKO Summer Riko Challenge 2026 was designed to engage middle and high school students, alongside their parents, in the fascinating world of architecture. Over the two days, 13 families (comprising 26 participants, including 15 students) attended, exploring the intersection of technology and design in modern residences.

Hands-On Experiences

Participants had the unique opportunity to engage in practical experiments at HASEKO's Technology Research Institute. Here, attendees took part in activities focusing on frequency analysis—a fascinating process where they struck various building materials to collect and analyze sound data. Through this, students learned how different materials contribute to the acoustic properties of buildings.

Furthermore, participants experienced the differences in sound perception through exercises related to sound reflection, absorption, and insulation. Feedback from attendees included revelations about how sound changes with different materials, underscoring the effectiveness and importance of acoustics in architectural design.

The tour of the HASEKO Apartment Museum provided an insightful glimpse into the evolution and history of residential buildings in Japan. Students explored various exhibits detailing the development of urban living spaces over the decades. They also enjoyed an augmented reality (AR) experience utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM), allowing them to visualize architectural designs in an interactive format. This cutting-edge technology helped deepen their understanding of modern construction practices and innovative design strategies.

Encouraging Future Innovators

HASEKO has been an active supporter of the Riko Challenge initiative since its inception in 2017, aiming to spark interest in engineering and technical professions among the younger generation. By providing immersive educational experiences like the Summer Riko Challenge, HASEKO hopes to cultivate a passion for STEM fields and encourage future career considerations.

Participant Reflections

Feedback from participants highlighted the event's success in enhancing awareness about living environments:
  • - “I have gained a deeper understanding of what goes into making a house.”
  • - “I was amazed at how sound was completely blocked out once we entered the soundproof room.”
  • - “I learned that the materials can significantly affect sound.”

The HASEKO Summer Riko Challenge 2026 stands as a significant step in bridging gaps and presenting exciting prospects for young women in technology. With plans for continuous involvement in initiatives like this, HASEKO remains committed to inspiring the next generation of innovators in the fields of architecture and engineering.
