Jazz at Lincoln Center Announces Leadership Transition
On January 29, 2026, Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) issued a landmark announcement regarding its leadership. After nearly four decades of visionary leadership, Wynton Marsalis has decided to step away from his current role at JALC. He will, however, continue to serve as the Artistic Director throughout the 2026-2027 season. From July 2027 onwards, he will transition into an advisory role as a founding advisor. Marsalis will remain a permanent member of the board until the conclusion of his contract in June 2028.
This significant transition comes at a time when the organization is thriving. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has welcomed new musicians and is experiencing strong concert sales. Educational initiatives continue to expand with programs such as Essentially Ellington and Let Freedom Swing, alongside national programs that have solidified JALC as a beacon for jazz culture. Events like the Jazz Congress and projects under Blue Engine Records have become integral components of the organization’s identity.
In preparation for this change, JALC’s board has established a committee to collaborate with Marsalis in identifying the next generation of artistic leadership. Looking ahead to the departure of Greg Scholl in June of this year, another committee will spearhead the search for the next executive director. The newly appointed executive director and artistic director will work as equal partners responsible to the board.
Reflecting on his journey, Marsalis stated, “When we founded Jazz at Lincoln Center in 1987, our goal was to establish a lasting institution dedicated to jazz, often an overlooked aspect of American culture. JALC has been my lifelong honor, and I take great pride in our progress. Our orchestra has represented my artistic priority both as a musician and as a citizen. As we approach our 40th anniversary, it feels like the right moment for this transition. I am thankful for my fellow artists, the board, the leadership, the staff, and the incredible dedication of everyone involved in the JLCO. Our mission continues and remains as crucial as ever. The future of JALC energizes me as new leadership will elevate us even further. We are surrounded by emerging, extraordinarily talented, capable, and inspired musicians and supporters.”
The 2026-2027 season will be an international celebration of Wynton Marsalis’s career and lasting influence, with the full lineup set to be announced in February 2026.
