An Unforgettable Upcycling Experience for Families at Mercure Saga Karatsu Resort

A Unique Family Experience at Mercure Saga Karatsu Resort

This summer, Mercure Saga Karatsu Resort in Japan offered families a chance to engage in an extraordinary upcycling activity. The workshop, organized by the NPO Karatsu Farm & Food, attracted 163 participants over two days, allowing families to create distinctive, handmade items while learning about the importance of environmental sustainability.

The resort sits near the stunning Niji no Matsubara, one of Japan's three great pine groves, providing a picturesque backdrop for the workshops. Participants enjoyed crafting coasters and beaded bracelets from recycled materials, including plastic bottle caps gathered from the hotel's vending machines. Notably, international tourists also joined the experience, making it a global initiative.

The Creative Process

Families collaborated to transform discarded plastic caps into beautiful coasters, each with a unique marbled pattern. This process involved selecting colorful caps, melting them down, and pressing them into molds engraved with the hotel's logo. The moment the machine revealed the finished product was a highlight for all, bursting with joy and excitement.

If coasters weren't enough, attendees could also partake in crafting bracelets using recycled plastic beads, creating an atmosphere of creativity and learning that engaged everyone from young children to adults. The hands-on experience not only fostered creativity but also ignited discussions among family members about environmental issues.

Educating on Marine Plastic Pollution

At the start of each session, participants received a brief lesson on marine plastic pollution. They learned how plastic waste affects the coastal waters of Karatsu and how upcycling can turn what would have been discarded into valuable treasures. The program emphasized learning through action, as families fully immersed themselves in the crafting process.

The two-day workshop showcased a remarkable level of interest in tackling the marine plastic crisis and upcycling. Participants keenly engaged with the topics at hand, highlighting the rising awareness and appreciation for sustainable practices.

A Circular Economy in Action

Through this initiative, around 3,700 caps, weighing approximately 9.2 kg, were diverted from incineration, resulting in an estimated reduction of 20 kg of CO2 emissions. The method reflects the principles of a circular economy, aiming to recycle used materials and give them new life. The transformation of plastic caps into coasters exemplifies how creative thinking can lead to meaningful environmental action.

Comments from the NPO

Hiroaki Kojima, Deputy Director of Karatsu Farm & Food, shared, “It brings me joy to see so many families participate and enjoy learning about the environment while on vacation. The delight expressed when the caps transformed into coasters was priceless, and we hope these experiences become memories they cherish.”

Upcoming Workshop Details

The next upcycling experience is scheduled for September 20, 2026. This workshop invites hotel guests to learn about marine plastic issues and participate in crafting with recycled materials. Attendees can also explore a display of upcycled products in the hotel's shopping plaza.

Waste-to-Resource: The Precious Plastic Project

The Karatsu Farm & Food NPO has paired with the Precious Plastic project to pioneer upcycling activities in the region. They promote hands-on environmental education through various workshops in schools and community events, nurturing a culture of sustainability in Karatsu. The success of this initiative highlights the importance of integrating environmental awareness into family activities, fostering a deeper understanding and relationship with nature.
