Celebrating the Third Year of Recycling at Haneda Airport
This October marks the third year of the "Haneda de Recycling – From Bottles to Bottles" event, organized by the Japan Soft Drink Association and the Japan Airport Building Corporation. As part of the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) campaign, this initiative focuses on the promotion of horizontal recycling for PET bottles.
The event aims to raise awareness about the eco-friendly recycling practices within Haneda Airport, attracting numerous visitors to learn and engage. This year's activities will include informative poster displays, interactive quizzes, and participation from Ota City's beloved character "Hanepyoon," who will be making a special appearance.
The Japan Soft Drink Association emphasizes the importance of enhancing the separation of PET bottles disposed of outside homes, thereby improving the quality of collected bottles to promote effective bottle-to-bottle recycling. By conducting awareness programs at major airports across Japan, the association aims to inspire travelers to adopt better recycling habits.
In 2024, the Japan Airport Building Corporation plans to install dedicated PET bottle collection bins throughout all terminals at Haneda Airport, with an ambitious target of collecting approximately 250,000 kg of PET bottles, equivalent to over 11 million 500ml bottles. Additionally, specialized bins for bottle caps will also be set up in certain areas of Terminals 1 and 2, further enhancing the recycling process.
The event will take place from October 17 to 19, 2025, on the 5th floor of the second terminal at Haneda Airport, known as Flight Deck Tokyo. Attendees can learn about the bottle-to-bottle initiative through a permanent poster session and enjoy complimentary beverages while supplies last.
Learning Through Fun
This year's poster session is designed to educate participants about the importance of bottle-to-bottle recycling in an enjoyable manner. Visitors will receive explanations about the recycling system and examples of PET bottle recycling cases within the airport. Those who participate in the quiz after learning about the initiative will be rewarded with an original badge (while supplies last).
With over 86 million travelers visiting Haneda Airport annually, this event serves as a powerful platform to enhance recognition and support for horizontal recycling efforts, further promoting effective separation of PET bottles as a valuable resource. By contributing to the establishment of a solid recycling scheme and the realization of bottle-to-bottle recycling, both the Japan Soft Drink Association and the Japan Airport Building Corporation are committed to supporting deep decarbonization throughout the entire supply chain.
Commitment to Sustainability
The Japan Soft Drink Association has declared ambitious goals, including achieving 100% effective use of PET bottles by 2030 and reaching a bottle-to-bottle recycling rate of over 50% by 2030. This initiative is not only significant for resource circulation but also for reducing CO₂ emissions. To attain these goals, it is crucial to ensure reliable collection and improve the quality of recycling containers.
The soft drink industry is actively collaborating with businesses and municipal entities to tackle these challenges through joint efforts and awareness-raising activities. Together, we can foster a circular economy that benefits both the environment and future generations.
