Exploring the Interplay of Color and Lacquer at Wako's Duo Exhibition

Exploring the Interplay of Color and Lacquer

Wako, a renowned venue in Ginza, will host the exhibition titled "Ryo Sato and Fumihiko Arakawa: Playing Between Color and Lacquer" from July 17 to 27 in the Seiko House Hall. This showcase highlights the unique works of two master artisans whose crafts, though distinct in material, resonate with a shared aesthetic vision.

Ceramic artist Ryo Sato employs both hand-throwing and wheel-throwing techniques to create vibrant Kutani porcelain, bringing warmth and a scenic essence to life. His pieces are characterized by their soulful forms and rich colors, capturing the viewer's imagination. In contrast, lacquer artist Fumihiko Arakawa focuses on the innate sheen of lacquer, crafting contemporary designs that feature intricate metallic embellishments and diverse coating techniques.

Both artists hail from Ishikawa Prefecture, an area recognized for its thriving craft culture. Despite their different mediums, the closeness in their pursuit of expression draws the two together, as seen in their latest creations. This exhibition offers an opportunity to explore the commonalities in their artistic expressions—through form, lines, and color—positioning their works as a dialogue between the realms of color porcelain and lacquer art.

A Closer Look: The Exhibition’s Highlights

The exhibition includes notable pieces like Sato’s ceramic boxes, "Kaze Hana" and "Iro Fukubuki," alongside Arakawa's beautifully crafted lacquer boxes. Visitors can expect to find intricate details combined with the artists' latest explorations in their crafts.

In addition to the main exhibition, Wako will host a gallery talk featuring both artists on July 19 at 14:00. This is a rare opportunity to hear insights into their creative processes directly from the artists themselves. Please note that the venue may limit entry during times of high attendance.
