HOKUSAI IN BLOOM Exhibition in Tokyo

Art enthusiasts are in for a treat as the highly anticipated exhibition, "HOKUSAI IN BLOOM," kicks off on April 17, 2025, in Toranomon, Tokyo. Hosted at the esteemed art cruise gallery by Baycrew’s, this exhibition marks the seventh event in the gallery's series, focusing primarily on works that depict the theme of flowers. A total of 65 pieces, along with special displays, will constitute the exhibition, promising a captivating experience for visitors.

A Floral Celebration

The theme of the exhibition, characterized by the word "BLOOM," signifies the blooming beauty captured by Katsushika Hokusai, a legendary Edo-period ukiyo-e artist. Throughout history, flowers have symbolized beauty, ideals, fleeting moments, and even fear. So, how did Hokusai perceive flowers through his art? The exhibition will invite visitors to explore this question as they delve into the nuanced and sometimes playful interpretations of flowers in Hokusai's masterpieces.

This exhibition comes approximately a year after the gallery's last presentation of Hokusai's art, titled "PLAY w/ HOKUSAI," which featured 80 of his works. This time, art cruise gallery aims to provide a fresh perspective on Hokusai's artistry by showcasing works that have never been displayed before, ensuring that attendees will discover new dimensions of his creativity.

Enjoying the Spring Vibes

Spring is the season that breathes life back into nature, as vibrant colors of blossoms grace both urban and rural landscapes. Visitors to the gallery will have the unique opportunity to appreciate Hokusai's meticulous techniques and humorous depictions of the divine essences surrounding flowers, alongside scenes of Edo life and the lively spirit of its inhabitants.

About HOKUSAI MANGA

One of the key highlights of the exhibition is the inclusion of works from Hokusai's "HOKUSAI MANGA." This series, composed of 15 volumes, served as a manual for his disciples scattered across the country, enabling them to learn his techniques. The collection is known for its exceptional representation and audacious compositions that have influenced countless artists globally. Notable figures such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, and Vincent van Gogh drew inspiration from Hokusai’s work, underscoring the far-reaching impact of his art. Moreover, "HOKUSAI MANGA" is considered a precursor to contemporary manga, with its title translating to a form of drawing that embraces spontaneity and a carefree approach. It became a bestselling phenomenon during the Edo period, resonating with both commoners and nobility alike.

Collaborating with Experts

This exhibition is made possible through the collaboration with Mr. Man Utagawa, a renowned collector of the "HOKUSAI MANGA" and the owner of a specialist art shop in Nihonbashi, Utagawa Soko-do. Over the past 50 years, he has meticulously curated an impressive collection, deemed the world's largest, comprising over 1,700 volumes. His dedication to promoting the essence of "HOKUSAI MANGA" earned him the prestigious 10th International Ukiyo-e Society Award in 2016 for his efforts in enlightening others about this iconic work.

The Artist's Legacy

Katsushika Hokusai was born in 1760 in Honjo, present-day Sumida, Tokyo. Over his extensive career, spanning nearly 70 years, he left behind a diverse portfolio, creating approximately 30,000 works that include brush paintings, woodblock prints, and erotic art.
