Free Kids Sports Class to Combat Declining Physical Fitness in Nakano

Tackling Declining Physical Fitness Among Children!

On March 21, 2026, Nakano's Philosophical Park will be offering a free "Kids Sports Class" designed to help children acquire fundamental physical skills while having fun. This initiative, conducted by the Japan Sports Facilities Company, aims to address the alarming decline in fitness levels among elementary school students, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background of the Event

The Japanese Ministry of Sports' 2024 survey on children’s physical fitness indicates that children's fitness scores have stagnated for boys and continued to decline for girls due to the impacts of the pandemic. Additionally, urban areas have seen a notable decrease in outdoor play and physical activity opportunities, which could pose long-term health risks and potential impact on academic performance.

Learning Module

Led by Coach Kenichi Mori, participants will enjoy learning about basic movement techniques such as running, throwing, and jumping in an engaging environment. This class is designed to be accessible for beginners, ensuring that everyone can participate comfortably.

In the latter part of the event, participants who wish to do so will have the opportunity to take part in timing their 50m dash and throwing a Javelin-like ball.

The Javelin-like ball is an innovative training tool with a unique shape designed to encourage participants to engage their entire body when tossing. It's utilized in various sports as a foundational throwing exercise and makes it easier to assess one's throwing technique through visual and auditory feedback.

Other Events at Philosophical Park

Beyond the kids' class, Philosophical Park regularly hosts adult-oriented fitness initiatives such as Nordic walking (scheduled for the first Friday of each month), postpartum “Mama Fit” classes (held on the first and third Mondays), and various health exercise classes.

These opportunities encourage community members to engage in physical activities collectively, making exercise more approachable and enjoyable.
