Kazuto Muraki's Solo Exhibition 'Imitation'

The GALLERY ROOM・A, operated by the art communication platform ArtSticker, will host the debut solo exhibition titled 'Imitation' by the emerging artist Kazuto Muraki, from July 4, 2026, to August 2, 2026. With a fresh perspective following his graduation from the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2025, Muraki delves into the concept of imitation within the realms of art, addressing the intricate dance between originality and reproduction.

Exhibition Overview

This exhibition marks a significant milestone for Kazuto Muraki, as it represents his first solo endeavor at GALLERY ROOM・A. Known for his exploration of popular culture and the intersections of photographic and video mediums, Muraki’s works engage deeply with the processes through which individuals perceive and assign meanings to images. He not only focuses on the motifs within his art but also investigates the connections these pieces create with the audience's memories and experiences, as he aims to probe the nuances of perception through painting.

In 'Imitation', Muraki questions the essence of painting through the lens of imitation. How does one find meaning in the act of painting itself? The exhibition seeks to navigate through Muraki’s influences and point of references, confronting the issues surrounding realism and the mimicry of other’s expressions. Rather than simply reproducing, Muraki suggests that imitation, marked by subtle deviations within the creative process, catalyzes new forms of expression. Focusing on these deviations allows for a dialogue on artistic identity and the contemporary methods of painting.

Artist Statement

Muraki invites viewers into his artistic journey where he contemplates the significance of creating under the weight of previous influences. His perspective challenges traditional views on realism, with an intriguing admission of his disdain for hyperrealistic works, which he feels may lack meaningful engagement. By interactively imitating established styles and figures, he acknowledges that the act of painting is not just about replication but continuously varying from those influences, revealing his own artistic identity in the process. “The deviations are not failures but rather the spaces where I exist,” reflects Muraki.

In this vein, his exhibition documents the aspects of deviation, establishing a narrative that unfolds through the act of imitation itself. Viewers are encouraged to contemplate how influences shape individual expression and the endless possibilities that arise from the interplay of creation and reference.
