Neuroscience-Backed Instruction from Lindamood-Bell Addresses National Reading and Math Declines

The recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) report has uncovered alarming statistics regarding U.S. high school students' readiness. The findings reveal that in 2024, a staggering 32% of 12th graders scored below basic in reading, while 45% fell below basic in math. Unfortunately, these figures indicate a decline compared to 2019, raising serious concerns about the effectiveness of current educational strategies.

According to the NAEP, the scores of lower-performing students at the 10th and 25th percentiles were at their lowest levels recorded, leading to a widening gap between the highest and lowest performers—a trend never seen before.

Nanci Bell, literacy expert and co-founder of Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes (LBLP), expressed her worries regarding these outcomes. "I am deeply concerned about the recent NAEP scores showing that far too many students are reading well below their potential and grade level. Despite decades of educational initiatives, including the recent focus on the Science of Reading, we are still failing many students who depend on our help to acquire crucial skills for success both academically and in life. It is our duty to confront this ongoing issue and strategize new ways to positively impact student outcomes. Our students deserve more, and it is our responsibility to provide better educational experiences."
