Translumina Launches SPARX Global Trial to Explore Drug-Coated Balloons for Complex Coronary Disease

Launch of the SPARX Global Trial by Translumina

Translumina Therapeutics has officially launched the SPARX Global clinical trial, a multinational, randomized, controlled study aimed at gathering crucial scientific evidence regarding drug-coated balloons (DCBs) for the treatment of complex coronary artery diseases. This initiative represents a major step in evaluating the efficacy of DCBs compared to the widely used drug-eluting stents (DES) in patients suffering from these intricate health issues.

Overview of the SPARX Global Trial

The SPARX study aims to provide comparative data that addresses pivotal clinical questions surrounding the safety and long-term effectiveness of a therapeutic strategy that seeks to leave no implant behind. This approach is particularly relevant considering the potential adverse events associated with permanent metallic implants over time. The SPARX trial is being positioned as one of the largest DCB multinational randomized clinical studies conducted to date and is expected to set the foundation for how DCBs will be used in complex coronary interventions moving forward.

Professor Adnan Kastrati, chairman of the study committee, emphasizes, "Despite advancements in drug-eluting stents, permanent metal implants can lead to late adverse events, posing significant risks. Drug-coated balloons that do not leave any permanent implants behind may serve as an effective therapeutic alternative."

Significance of DCBs in Coronary Interventions

The need for innovative solutions in coronary interventions is underscored by the high prevalence of coronary artery disease worldwide. The SPARX trial is designed not only to assess the performance of drug-coated balloons in a diverse range of coronary lesions but also to explore their implications for improving clinical practices and treatment recommendations on an international scale.

Professor Florim Cuculi, the global principal investigator from the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital in Switzerland, notes, "Our study will recruit 1,380 patients across 10 countries, providing a robust platform for gathering randomized, comparative data between two established technologies in drug-coated balloon treatments. We believe SPARX will contribute significantly to defining the role of DCBs in contemporary coronary interventions."

Exploring the Need for Clinical Evidence

India is among the countries with the highest risk of coronary artery disease, making it a crucial location for conducting the SPARX trial. Dr. Praveen Chandra, co-global principal investigator from Medanta-The Medicity in Gurgaon, India, states, "The prevalence of diabetes and complex coronary pathologies in India makes this trial essential for generating pertinent clinical data that can inform therapeutic decisions for coronary interventions."

The results from the SPARX trial are anticipated not only to reshape clinical expectations but also to refine the way practitioners approach treatment for coronary artery disease. With a follow-up duration of two years and an endpoint focusing on a composite device-oriented clinical event (DOCE) at one year, the data generated will be pivotal.

Translumina’s Commitment to Innovation in Cardiology

According to Sudipta Ghosh, managing director of the cardiovascular division at Translumina, the SPARX trial showcases the company’s commitment to driving evidence-based innovation in interventional cardiology. The clinical investigation will evaluate the patented drug-coated balloon, Protégé™, which incorporates innovative medication delivery methods to ensure drug integrity during administration. He emphasizes, "Our goal is to generate high-quality randomized clinical data that will help delineate the role of DCBs and aid physicians in delivering optimal care for their patients suffering from complex coronary conditions."

Translumina Therapeutics Private Limited is sponsoring the SPARX Global trial, which is registered under CTRI - CTRI/2026/04/109375 and ClinicalTrials.gov - NCT07397845. As a key subsidiary of Integris Medtech Limited, Translumina specializes in cardiovascular medical technologies and prioritizes advancements in interventional cardiology. Its product lineup includes drug-eluting stents, drug-coated balloons, and balloon catheters, serving healthcare professionals across 65 countries with regulatory standards that meet international quality certifications.

As the landscape of interventional cardiology continues to evolve, the SPARX Global trial stands as a significant opportunity to redefine treatment modalities for coronary artery disease, potentially influencing clinical practices and international guidelines in years to come.
