Sustainable Christmas Tree Designed to Connect People and Nature at Unimo Chiharadai

Unimo Chiharadai’s Sustainable Christmas Tree Initiative

Unimo Chiharadai, a prominent shopping center managed by JLL Retail Management, located in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture, is set to unveil a unique sustainable Christmas tree for its 2025 Christmas promotion. This tree, crafted primarily from bamboo—an emblematic material in the Ichihara area's natural setting—reflects a commitment to sustainability and community collaboration.

An Exhibition of Environmental Awareness

The bamboo tree, dubbed the 'Bamboo Tree,' is constructed from bamboo harvested in the nearby satoyama (rural forest), showcasing a circular economy principle by utilizing local resources. Ichihara City is known for its rich blend of industry, art, and nature. However, it also faces challenges like the uncontrolled expansion of abandoned bamboo groves and underutilized natural resources.

With this initiative, Unimo Chiharadai aims to create an enchanting Christmas experience while raising environmental awareness among visitors. The Bamboo Tree stands as a powerful symbol, inviting guests to reflect on ecological issues while enjoying the holiday festivities.

Community Collaboration with SaToYaMa

The realization of the Bamboo Tree is made possible through collaboration with the local citizen group 'SaToYaMa Yokushitai,' which is dedicated to environmental conservation and the sustainable management of rural landscapes. The bamboo selected for the tree comes from carefully executed thinning processes, addressing local environmental challenges. Each piece of bamboo, rich with life, is treated with care to preserve its natural texture, creating a harmonious design that integrates festive decorations.

The tree features bamboo ornaments, including specifically crafted bamboo balls, enhancing its presence and evoking warmth and tranquility. Additionally, informative panels articulate the significance of the materials used, providing visitors with an opportunity to engage critically with the concept of sustainability.

A Symbolic Representation of Nature and Community

More than just seasonal decor, the Bamboo Tree represents a confluence of local nature, community, and a vision for the future. As an installation that tangibly illustrates sustainability, it aligns with the facility’s operational ethos rooted in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.

After the holiday season, the bamboo used for the tree will not go to waste; it will be processed into bamboo chips for mulching, thereby continuing the sustainable practices initiated during the installation.

Introducing 'Dreaming Christmas'

The Bamboo Tree is a central feature of Unimo Chiharadai's Christmas promotion, titled 'Dreaming Christmas.' This initiative delves into an original story set in the fictional land of 'Unimo-no-Kuni,' showcasing the charms of Ichihara. Visitors will embark on a narrative journey, exploring themes of industry, rural life, and art through various engaging installations.

The event includes attractions like 'photo spot storyboards,' an experiential rally, and sustainable workshops in collaboration with local organizations such as the Chiba Art Academy and the Ichihara Bee Farm. These activities aim to provide a multifaceted experience that combines decoration, interaction, and local engagement—making this Christmas truly unique.
