Museum of the Moon: A Celestial Experience in Rahway, NJ
In a stunning first for New Jersey, the acclaimed
Museum of the Moon, a traveling artwork by U.K. artist
Luke Jerram, will grace the Union County Performing Arts Center (UCPAC) in
Rahway this coming October 2025. This extraordinary installation reflects the moon in mesmerizing detail, using actual NASA imagery of the lunar surface to create a beautiful visual and auditory experience.
What to Expect at the Event
The
Museum of the Moon, measuring an impressive
23 feet in diameter, creates an atmosphere that transcends mere observation. Each inch of the sculpture symbolizes an actual distance of nearly
8 miles on the moon's surface. Accompanying the moon's visual beauty is a specially composed soundtrack from award-winning composer
Dan Jones, which incorporates elements of
moonlight and sound, enhancing the experience for all who encounter it.
This exhibition is not just an art installation; it forms the centerpiece of
the Festival of the Moon, a unique celebration of moon-themed events that will unfold over a thrilling
17 days from
October 4 to 20, 2025. Visitors can expect a variety of live performances, striking visual arts, dance, children's theater, opera, and film—all under the enchanting glow of the moon. Participating companies include distinguished local organizations like the
New Jersey Symphony,
American Repertory Ballet,
New Jersey Opera Theater, and the
Chinese Culture Arts Association, resulting in breathtaking performances that honor the moon’s beauty.
Community Engagement and Cultural Significance
Rahway's Mayor,
Raymond A. Giacobbe, emphasized the pride of the community in hosting such an impressive exhibition, stating, “This awe-inspiring presentation not only brings world-class art to our doorstep but also invites our community to gather under the glow of imagination and wonder.” The festival promises to be an opportunity for cultural engagement and celebration, showcasing Rahway as a budding
cultural hotspot.
The decorative charm of UCPAC, alongside this mesmerizing artwork, offers an unmatched opportunity for visitors to revel in creative expression and community spirit. Executive Director
Danni Newbury stated, “We are honored to be the landing site for the Museum of the Moon this October. It's a shining example of what happens when visionary partners come together to elevate culture in our city.”
