Record Turnout at the Catan Japan Championship with 41% First-Time Participants!

The 2026 Catan Japan Championship kicked off on April 12, hosted by GP Inc., located in Shinjuku, Tokyo. This major board game event has drawn incredible interest, with tickets for several venues selling out quickly, demonstrating its wide appeal. With only a few venues remaining, the excitement is palpable across the country.

One of the standout features this year is the impressive participation rate, with an average of 41% of attendees being first-time participants. This year’s statistics suggest a growing interest in both Catan itself and board games in general. Notably, past events recorded first-time participation rates of 37% in 2025 and a remarkable 51% in 2026, indicating a positive trend.

In addition to the competitive spirit, the event has local government support, as highlighted during the opening ceremony of the Tohoku regional tournament where Mayor Nakadate of Morioka greeted the attendees. His personal connection to the game, playing it with his family, created an engaging atmosphere.

Three regional tournaments remain: Hokkaido, Chugoku-Shikoku, and Kanto, with the Kanto tournament expected to attract a massive crowd of 700 participants. Additional seating has been added to accommodate more players, encouraging new and different interactions among those who play.

Another significant change this year is the rise in regional tournaments, with a total of eight taking place across Japan, culminating in a grand final in Tokyo. This expansion is a reflection of the continuous growth of the board game market in Japan, with more than 1,400 participants expected in total.

The championship promises to symbolize the thriving community of Catan players in Japan, as well as to solidify its status as the largest championship of its kind in the nation. These competitions allow enthusiasts to not only showcase their strategic skills in gameplay but also provide a platform for social interactions.

Following the regional tournaments, the grand finale set for August 2 will select a representative to compete in the Catan World Championship, slated for 2027. Participants can look forward to not only a competitive experience but also the chance for their skills to shine on an international stage.

The game of Catan itself has become a cultural phenomenon, with over 45 million copies sold worldwide since its launch. It incorporates elements of strategy, negotiation, and luck, allowing for a diverse playing experience that welcomes both new and experienced players.

Recently, Catan has also found utility in educational settings, serving as a tool for teaching negotiation skills and interaction among students. This evolution highlights how board games can bridge gaps in learning and community engagement, extending beyond recreational purposes.

For those interested in more information or to participate in the remaining tournaments, details can be found on the official Catan championship website. With the growing community and enticing competitions, this is an event you won’t want to miss!
