SCENTMATIC Launches Innovative Fragrance Experience at New Media Event

SCENTMATIC Unveils Fragrance Discovery Lab: A New Sensory Experience

On April 21, 2026, SCENTMATIC Inc., led by CEO Toshiharu Kurisu, hosted a media event to introduce their groundbreaking new service, the "Fragrance Discovery Lab." This innovative experience, located on the 5th floor of the Tokyu Plaza Omotesando, aims to transform subjective feelings into exquisite scents. Kurisu opened the event by reflecting on the challenges of selecting fragrances, something that many people find difficult.

Having established the company in 2019 with a focus on capturing scent through language, SCENTMATIC has dedicated the last six years to refining this unique approach in both the Japanese and UK markets. Kurisu emphasized the pervasive global challenge of fragrance selection, noting that even in mature markets like Europe, consumers often struggle to express their preferences and face confusion when selecting scents.

He metaphorically compared the experience of viewing a painting to finding fragrance, explaining that just as a comic enhances a painting’s emotional impact through words, scent can resonate more strongly when translated into language.

Introduction of New Sensory Experiences

Kurisu shared insights on three innovative experiences introduced at the Fragrance Discovery Lab: Fashion→Fragrance, Photo→Fragrance, and Chat→Fragrance. These experiences aim to broaden the ways in which individuals encounter scents, allowing them to select fragrances not just by intuition but also with understanding and confidence.

1. Fashion→Fragrance

In the Fashion experience, participants can step in front of a smart mirror that analyzes their outfit. The technology suggests a fragrance that aligns with their desired image, making choosing a scent an engaging and personalized experience.

2. Photo→Fragrance

During the Photo experience, users select a favorite image from their smartphone, triggering AI to interpret that picture and match it with a fragrance that aligns with their aesthetic. This offers a journey into scent based on personal memories and favorites.

3. Chat→Fragrance

Engaging with the Chat experience allows participants to speak to a fragrance bottle. The AI narrates the story and characteristics of the scent, creating a deeper connection and understanding of the chosen perfume.

Held at the Tokyu Plaza Omotesando, the lab inspires guests to explore their unique fragrance preferences through interactive experiences driven by the latest technologies.

The Innovative KAORIUM AI System

Central to SCENTMATIC's vision is the KAORIUM system, an AI interface designed to correlate scents with language. This technology transforms the often ambiguous impressions of fragrances into understandable words, allowing users to consciously navigate their olfactory experiences. Not only does this enhance personal scent selection, but it also opens avenues in other fields such as education, dining, and retail, creating exciting new business opportunities.

SCENTMATIC has also gained international recognition for its innovative approach, having received the Silver Award at the renowned A’ Design Award.

In a world where fragrance often remains an elusive concept, SCENTMATIC’s Fragrance Discovery Lab and the KAORIUM system are leading the way in creating accessible and enjoyable scent experiences. This exciting initiative promises not only to redefine how individuals interface with fragrance but also to inspire future innovations across multiple sectors.
