Remembering R.W. Nelson: A Legacy of Innovation and Philanthropy at Kemin Industries
On April 7, 2025,
R.W. Nelson, the revered co-founder and chairman of Kemin Industries, passed away peacefully at the age of 98 in his home in Des Moines, Iowa. His life was marked by an unyielding commitment to innovation and philanthropy, leaving behind a legacy that transformed lives across the globe.
Nelson was a giant in the world of business, known for his visionary approach and tireless work ethic. He dedicated nearly 60 years to Kemin, a company that has become a leader in the development of ingredients for the health and nutrition sectors and beyond. His son, Dr. Chris Nelson, expressed the family's sorrow over the loss, underscoring R.W.'s deep commitment to both family and community, as well as his relentless drive to improve the company.
Born on February 28, 1927, in Kansas City, Missouri, R.W. moved to Des Moines, where he lived for the rest of his life. After graduating from Drake University with a degree in biology and chemistry, R.W. and his wife,
Mary Nelson, founded Kemin Industries in 1961. With just $10,000 in savings, the couple began their journey in their family living room while simultaneously raising five children. This humble start laid the foundation for what would become a global enterprise.
Under R.W.'s leadership, Kemin transitioned from its modest beginnings to a multinational corporation providing over 500 specialized ingredients for various industries, including human and animal health, nutraceuticals, and food technologies. With operations in 90 countries and a customer base spanning more than 120 countries, Kemin has impacted the lives of billions.
R.W. was not just a businessman; he was also an accomplished innovator. He held four patents and received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the President's
“E” Certificate for Exports and the
“E” Star Award for Excellence in Export during the Nixon and Carter administrations, respectively. These honors reflect his significant contributions to the global market and his commitment to quality and service.
Beyond his business achievements, R.W. was deeply involved in philanthropy. He and Mary quietly championed numerous causes, contributing significantly to education and community development in Iowa and beyond. Their legacy includes supporting local schools, disaster relief efforts, and international humanitarian projects. They established a school in China and assisted in rebuilding a fishing community in India following a tsunami, demonstrating their commitment to social responsibility.
R.W.'s leadership style embodied the principles of servant leadership. He believed that businesses had a moral obligation to improve the quality of life in their communities. His tenure defined not only the direction of Kemin but also set a standard for corporate responsibility that many strive to emulate.
R.W. leaves behind his wife, Mary, and five children: Christopher, Elizabeth, Janet, David, and Molly, along with thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. His impact resonates through the lives he touched, the company he built, and the communities he enriched.
As the company plans to honor his legacy, the Nelson family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to organizations that support scientific and educational programs, reflecting R.W.'s lifelong dedication to these causes.
The story of R.W. Nelson is one of determination, innovation, and a profound commitment to improving lives. His passing marks the end of an era for Kemin Industries, but his legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
