Frescoball Japan Open 2025: A Celebration of Sport and Community
The
Frescoball Japan Open 2025 is officially confirmed to take place on
September 13-14 at the scenic
Okura Coast in
Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture. This tournament marks a significant milestone as it will be the sixth consecutive year for the association to hold an official tournament at this location.
The event is organized by the
Japan Frescoball Association (JFBA), led by
President Kenji Kuboshima, who has been instrumental in promoting this unique communication design sport within Japan. Frescoball originated in
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1945, and the sport has gained popularity across various beaches worldwide, emphasizing cooperation over competition. Unlike traditional sports where opponents face off, in Frescoball, pairs aim to keep a rally going through teamwork, earning points based on their collaboration rather than merely victory.
The first official tournament at Okura Coast, known as the
Okura Cup, took place in 2020. Prior to that, the events were primarily held in areas close to the JFBA headquarters, such as Tokyo and Kanagawa. The pandemic prompted a shift in strategy, allowing Frescoball to gradually expand its reach across Japan. Following the tournaments held in Okinawa, the Chugoku region, and Tohoku, the introduction of the
Frescoball Japan Tour has established a broader platform for the sport, emphasizing sport tourism as a key component.
Tournament Structure and Highlights
The Frescoball Japan Open 2025 will serve as the final tournament in a season comprising
eight annual events and is designated as the
National Championships. Teams competing in the
TOP Division will not only showcase their skills but will also be tested on their competitive resilience. This championship will determine the athletes who will represent Japan in international competitions.
Participants in the
2nd Division are emerging talents, known as
Frescoball LOVERS, who approach this tournament with personal goals and ambitions. Furthermore, the tournament will directly influence the
annual ranking, which will determine qualification for the first-ever international Frescoball event in Japan, the
JBG® SUMA FRESCOBALL WORLD CUP 2025, set to occur on
October 4-5. The excitement leading up to these competitions will surely captivate fans and players alike until the very last second.
At the
Okura Cup 2024, a record of
107 teams participated, solidifying Okura Coast’s reputation as a premier spot for Frescoball, often referred to as
“the Mecca of Frescoball”.

Promoting Community Through Sport
Frescoball's emphasis on teamwork has earned it the nickname
“the sport of empathy.” With a growing community in Japan, as of July 2025, there are
27 JFBA-certified regional clubs and
6 certified student organizations established across the country. The JFBA was founded in 2013 with the goal of promoting Frescoball through community engagement, aiming to establish clubs in all 47 prefectures by the end of 2025.
This year’s Frescoball Japan Open promises to be an exhilarating showcase of talent, sportsmanship, and community spirit. Whether you are a seasoned player or a curious spectator, this event is not to be missed!
