Lagoon Partners with the World Edamame Eating Championship
Lagoon, a unique free school dedicated to gifted children, is thrilled to announce its sponsorship of the 9th World Edamame Eating Championship, taking place on July 11, 2026, in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture. This collaboration not only supports the event but also provides an incredible opportunity for the students to engage with the community while showcasing their talents.
The Championship Event
Niigata Prefecture, famed for having the largest cultivation of edamame in Japan, serves as the perfect backdrop for this exciting international competition that celebrates the love for edamame. Contestants will vie for the title based on how many edamame they can eat within the challenging time limit of 100 seconds. Participants will include both individual and team entrants from all over the country, making it a vibrant gathering of edamame enthusiasts.
Alongside the eating competition, the venue, Aore Nagaoka, will host an "Edamame Marche" featuring various booths that focus on local food and agriculture, allowing visitors to explore the region's agricultural richness while enjoying a festival atmosphere suitable for all ages.
Lagoon's Vision and Participation
The decision to sponsor this event stemmed from ongoing conversations with Lagoon’s students, who expressed keen interest in participating after learning about the championship. Upholding the core value of maintaining student agency, Lagoon aims to transform their enthusiasm into action. Students voiced desires to attend the event and take part in its operation, leading to plans for a summer camp in Niigata.
Not only will three staff members participate in the team competition, but they will also set up a free educational consultation booth for parents concerned about their children's school life, pathways, and specific traits, such as twice-exceptionality (2E) and developmental differences. This space will be spearheaded by Lagoon's founder and gifted education expert, Mai Muramatsu.
