Tomoya Tsukamoto's Art Exhibition 'Journey of Encounters' Opens at Gallery & Bakery Tokyo

Tomoya Tsukamoto's Solo Exhibition "Journey of Encounters"

The art world eagerly anticipates the opening of Tomoya Tsukamoto's solo exhibition titled "Journey of Encounters" at Gallery & Bakery Tokyo, in collaboration with Admira Gallery in Hong Kong. This exhibition runs from July 5 to August 5, 2025, and marks Tsukamoto's first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 13 years, promising to be one of the largest art events of the year.

Located in Kyobashi, Gallery & Bakery Tokyo is a fusion of an art gallery and a bakery/café, created by The Chain Museum, which aims to enhance the cultural landscape of Tokyo. The venue itself is designed to reflect a luxurious space ideal for artistic exploration and interaction. It provides a unique opportunity to not only appreciate art but also enjoy food and conversation in a vibrant atmosphere.

Tomoya Tsukamoto, born in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture in 1982, is a contemporary artist based in Kanagawa. His innovative approach utilizes an airbrush technique that layers tiny dots to create pointillist effects. He artfully merges dripping techniques with light brush strokes, working primarily with primary colors—red, blue, and yellow—to dissolve the boundaries between figures and their backgrounds. Tsukamoto’s work showcases motifs of cherry blossoms, koi, human figures, and deer, delving into themes of light and shadow and the cycles of life and death.

Through his use of stencils molded from live plants and opposing positive and negative space, Tsukamoto modernizes the decorative aesthetics of the Rinpa school, while marrying Japanese sensibilities with a minimalist production process. His art invites viewers into an immersive experience, encouraging deep reflection on the relationships and encounters that shape our existence.

In his exhibition statement, Tsukamoto describes how daily life holds countless unexpected encounters, akin to the sparkle of light or the gentle breeze brushing against one's body. He aims to capture the intersections of these moments through his art, depicting ephemeral silhouettes born from the layered colors of his airbrush work. Through translucent patterns, the cycles of nature—such as the blooming and fading of cherry blossoms—serve as a meditation on the transient nature of life and beauty.

Tsukamoto's artistic journey is also influenced by the “visual mixing” theories of Georges Seurat and the need to rejuvenate the notion of beauty in art. His blending technique evokes a sense of impermanence and change, reflecting the ever-evolving nature of human existence and the myriad of encounters that define our lives. "Journey of Encounters" is envisioned not just as an exhibition, but as a waypoint leading to future connections and experiences.

Visitors can find Tsukamoto's featured works available for purchase through ArtSticker, an innovative platform that promotes art encounters and dialogue. The exhibition promises to be a monumental event for art lovers and casual visitors alike, set against the backdrop of one of Tokyo's newest cultural hubs.
