Stern Grove Festival Celebrates 89th Season with Free Performances by Music Legends

The Iconic Stern Grove Festival Returns for Its 89th Season!

As concert ticket prices continue to soar and music festivals dwindle, the Stern Grove Festival stands as a beacon of hope for music lovers. This annual event, which is now reaching its 89th season, is committed to providing free concerts, bringing together tens of thousands to enjoy world-class performances nestled in the picturesque Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove in San Francisco.

Running from June 14 to August 16, 2026, this year's lineup is nothing short of spectacular. Celebrated artists such as Al Green, Public Enemy, Patti LaBelle, Major Lazer, and Japanese Breakfast are set to take the stage alongside numerous local talents, making this one of the most grounded and community-centered seasons yet. With more than half of the artists hailing from the Bay Area, the festival embraces its roots while celebrating diverse musical genres.

Executive Director Bob Fiedler eloquently encapsulates the festival's essence, stating, "In our 89th season, we're reminded that music has a unique ability to lift us, heal us, and bring us together." This mission, which began in 1938 with the foundation laid by Rosalie Meyer Stern, has allowed more than 5 million attendees to partake in a shared love for music. Today, Rosalie’s legacy is honored by her great-great-grandsons, Matthew and Jason Goldman, who continue to ensure that the festival meets its founding ideals of accessibility and community.

In an era where many events are cash only affairs, the Stern Grove Festival has maintained its commitment to providing free entry. This allows individuals and families from various walks of life to experience music that enriches the soul. Matthew Goldman passionately explains, "Supporting live music feels more important than ever. We are honoring our local artists and staying true to our mission while ensuring this beloved tradition continues to thrive."

The festival will culminate in its signature event, The Big Picnic Weekend, a two-day fundraising extravaganza taking place on August 15 and 16. This highly anticipated finale will feature a sensational performance by Public Enemy on Saturday, followed by an unforgettable evening with Al Green, Goapele, and the GLIDE Ensemble on Sunday.

For those keen on enjoying the performances, free tickets will be distributed via a lottery system at sterngrove.org. With an inspiring mission and a dedication to free music, Stern Grove Festival has consistently proven to be a valuable cultural institution.
