Afcons Infrastructure Limited Receives Prestigious National Environmental Excellence Award from CII

Afcons Infrastructure Limited: A Leader in Sustainable Practices

Afcons Infrastructure Limited has proudly received the prestigious National Award for Environmental Best Practices 2026 from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). This accolade specifically recognizes the company’s exceptional management of biodiversity within the high-speed rail line project connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad, particularly in the C-2 section. This recognition underscores Afcons' commitment to integrating advanced environmental management strategies in large-scale infrastructure development while maintaining operational excellence and sustainability.

During a ceremony held on October 9, 2026, in Chennai, Mr. Mihir Mishra, Vice President of Afcons, and Mr. Sumon Paul, Assistant General Manager of HSE, accepted the award on behalf of the company. In remarks about this notable achievement, Mr. Giridhar Rajagopalan, Deputy General Manager of Afcons, stated, "At Afcons, sustainability is integral to how we execute our projects. Our goal is to minimize environmental impacts through diligent environmental management, responsible resource usage, and sustainable construction practices." This award symbolizes Afcons' innovative approach to sustainable infrastructure development and environmental stewardship.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project exemplifies Afcons’ dedication to practicing circular economy principles. Throughout various phases of the project, Afcons implemented several environmental initiatives:
  • - Recycling Concrete Washout: The washout residues from concrete were repurposed to reclaim sand, aggregates, and water.
  • - Reusing Tunnel Excavation Spoils: The materials extracted during tunneling were utilized for creating concrete segments.
  • - Wastewater Treatment: Wastewater generated from tunnel activities was treated before disposal, substantially reducing contamination risks.
  • - Natural Light Optimization: Skylights were integrated into the tunnel vault to maximize the influx of natural light, which effectively reduces energy consumption.

These practices not only minimize resource consumption and waste generation but also alleviate energy usage and lessen overall environmental impact, aligning with global sustainability standards.

Afcons Infrastructure Ltd., a flagship company of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, boasts over 60 years of experience with a robust track record in executing complex engineering and construction projects both in India and internationally. The firm operates in 31 nations across South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the CIS region. According to the latest ENR survey, Afcons is ranked among the top 140 international contractors globally, notably coming in 12th for bridges and 8th for maritime and port sectors.

This recognition from CII not only highlights Afcons’ commitment to environmental excellence but also reinforces its status as a leading player in sustainable infrastructure development in the engineering sector. In the years to come, Afcons is set to continue its journey towards innovative ecological practices, further solidifying its dedication to a sustainable future for the infrastructure industry.
