On December 9, 2025, the Foundation For A Bright Future, founded by Louis Hernandez Jr., unveiled its esteemed list of STEM scholarship recipients for this year. Meet the 2025 Awardees:


1. Ean Kim is pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. Known for his robotics experience and internship at the University of Texas Medical Device and Innovation Lab, Ean is enthusiastic about advancing healthcare accessibility through pioneering medical technologies such as 3D bioprinting of tissue grafts. He expresses gratitude, stating, "Receiving this scholarship is an incredible honor that fuels my commitment to the field of engineering and to creating medical devices that everyone can access."

2. Jennifer Espinosa Maldonado, an ambitious student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is studying Chemical Engineering with an Environmental Engineering Science minor. Despite obstacles, her passion for restoring ecosystems drives her ambitions. She mentioned, "Being recognized for my dedication as a Latina pursuing chemical engineering is an incredible honor, and I’m thankful for the support that will help enhance my efforts to impact the world positively."

3. Joshua Barrera attends Northeastern University, where he studies both Data Science and Biology. With a strong desire to support his family, he aims to enter Health Informatics. Balancing academics with work and volunteerism, he reflects on the value of determination, noting, "This scholarship has demonstrated that effort leads to success, and I’m thankful to everyone who has been part of my journey. I intend to keep striving to benefit others."

4. Kana Hutchens is majoring in Bioengineering and Computer Science at Stanford University. As a self-taught filmmaker and founder of the nonprofit Connecting The Dots Project, she uses her storytelling skills to spread awareness about environmental challenges. Kana states that the scholarship is crucial because it alleviates financial burdens and reinforces that her dreams are attainable: "This scholarship is not just financial assistance; it’s proof that perseverance can carve a path forward."

5. Melanie Laveriano is studying Environmental Engineering at Tufts University. Her personal experiences growing up in a low-income area fueled her determination to advocate for environmental justice. She feels the scholarship represents more than financial help, emphasizing, "It’s a reminder that my voice matters in striving for STEM inclusivity and empowering others to envision themselves as future innovators."

6. Morelia Gil Cubillo, who is studying Chemical Engineering at UC Berkeley, is particularly passionate about medical research. She aspires to become an MD/PhD focused on senility prevention through advancements in stem cell therapy and protein engineering. The scholarship symbolizes her determination to fund her education independently, as she observes, "It reassures me that I can work towards a more promising future for myself and my family."

This year, the For A Bright Future Foundation received over 10,000 applications, which highlighted the pressing need for educational support within underserved communities. The steering committee, led by Chairwoman Susie Hernandez and Vice-Chairwoman Jennifer Oddo, along with a diverse STEM selection team made up of industry professionals, ensured that the recipients exemplify excellence, dedication, and potential.
