Hampton University Celebrates Historic Elevation to Research 2 Status, Fostering Innovation and Growth

Hampton University has officially attained the prestigious Research 2 (R2) designation, a recognition indicating high research spending and significant doctorate production. This classification places Hampton among an elite group of 139 institutions nationwide, showcasing the university's commitment to advancing academic excellence and expanding research opportunities. With a requirement of at least $5 million in annual research expenditures and a minimum of 20 research doctorates awarded yearly, achieving R2 status is no small feat and signals a transformative era for the institution.

This milestone is especially significant as it highlights the rarity of high-level research classification among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Out of the 101 HBCUs in the United States, Hampton University is one of only 13 that receive this designation. This underscores the importance of Hampton's progress in research and its aim to elevate its position among America's leading research colleges.

University President Darrell K. Williams remarked, "Achieving Research 2 status reflects our unwavering dedication to academic excellence and groundbreaking research. It enhances our capacity for making impactful contributions through scholarly work and discovery."

The Carnegie Classification's ranking system is pivotal in assessing the breadth and volume of research activity at institutions. Attaining Research 2 opens doors for Hampton University to compete more effectively for federal grants, attract leading faculty, and offer students enhanced hands-on research experience. The achievement positions the university to foster innovation and contribute meaningfully to socioeconomic progress.

Hampton's ascension to Research 2 is not just a statistical milestone; it represents a paradigm shift in how Black institutions engage in high-level research. HBCUs comprise only three percent of U.S. academic institutions but account for a remarkable 25 percent of Black graduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Consequently, Hampton’s new status amplifies its role in shaping the next generation of Black scholars and researchers.

This elevation is rooted in significant investments in research initiatives, faculty development, and improved institutional infrastructures as part of Hampton's 10-year strategic plan titled "Elevating Hampton Excellence". Over recent years, Hampton has witnessed a considerable surge in research funding, currently surpassing $30 million. The university's research activities range from cancer treatment and climate science to cybersecurity advancements and artificial intelligence, addressing critical global challenges.

"This milestone spotlights the tremendous progress we have made in research and innovation," noted Dr. Neelam Azad, Vice President for Research. "Our faculty and students are making real-world impacts through groundbreaking research, and the R2 designation is a significant breakthrough that enhances our ability to secure funding and drive advancements across disciplines."

Looking to the future, the university is committed to utilizing its Research 2 status to further expand its research endeavors. Plans are in place to enhance funding sources, recruit top-tier faculty, and create more enriching research opportunities for students. Dr. Betty Stewart, Executive Vice President and Provost, shared that the goal remains to produce high-impact research that delivers societal benefits while facilitating transformative learning experiences.

In the long term, Hampton University is setting its sights on achieving Research 1 status, the highest tier in the Carnegie classification. Through continued investments in innovative faculty, interdisciplinary collaboration, and state-of-the-art facilities, Hampton is poised to amplify its research presence both nationally and globally.

Founded in 1868 and located in the picturesque setting of Hampton, Virginia, Hampton University is rooted in a long tradition of academic excellence and community engagement. The university combines a liberal arts education with strong scientific and professional training, offering a diverse array of programs, particularly in STEM, business, and health sciences. As a Carnegie R2-designated institution, Hampton University stands at the forefront of research in crucial areas while driving positive impacts for its local community and beyond.
