Okayama and Shinshu Universities Unite for Social Transformation via J-PEAKS Symposium

A Collaborative Future: The J-PEAKS Symposium

On March 17, 2025, Okayama University and Shinshu University hosted the J-PEAKS collaboration symposium at Okayama's Tsushima Campus, attended by more than 100 participants both onsite and online. The symposium focused on enhancing innovative research on transformative strategies for society, particularly in the fields of water and plant energy, leveraging their aligned interests. This cooperative effort aims to deepen shared understanding and foster groundbreaking advancements in research.

Notable speakers included Professors Yuta Nishina and Akira Yamagata from Okayama University, alongside Professors Katsuya Tejima and Takashi Hisatomi from Shinshu University. Their research presentations highlighted how innovative carbon materials and photocatalytic processes can address pressing global challenges.

Professor Nishina discussed the intersection of nanocarbon, circular economies, and the long-term vision associated with the J-PEAKS initiative, emphasizing the importance of developing advanced carbon materials. Meanwhile, Professor Yamagata explored the potential of photocatalysts for hydrogen production, explaining how controlling impurities can enhance the efficiency of these materials.

Professor Tejima elaborated on Shinshu University's efforts to create safe water through experimentation and robotics, while Professor Hisatomi detailed the development of large-scale hydrogen production systems grounded in sustainable practices. The emphasis on ensuring the safety of hydrogen transport pipelines was also a critical part of their research.

Following the presentations, discussions centered on the evolution of research universities and the establishment of collaborative strategies to foster research management and university reform. Okayama University's Masaki Kawamoto and URA's Takafumi Matsumoto shared insights into their initiatives aimed at transforming their university and society through effective decision-making frameworks involving research innovation. Shinshu University's Tatsuya Doi and Akihiro Yoshinari discussed their strategies for reinforcing research support infrastructure and establishing a global hub for water-related technologies.

Concluding the event, Nagoya University's Vice President, Akira Fujimaki, highlighted the importance of aligning the university staff with the ambitious goals set forth by both institutions. He expressed hope for continued collaboration and excitement among younger academic staff, reinforcing the commitment to supporting each other's growth.

The J-PEAKS project represents a significant national investment in university research support, aimed at enhancing Japan's global research competitiveness and establishing leading research universities. Okayama University is dedicated to fostering community and environmental sustainability and is committed to promoting innovative strategies in collaboration with various stakeholders. Expectations are high for ongoing developments as Okayama University, alongside its partner institutions like Shinshu University, strives to impact societal transformation positively.

The event, organized by Okayama University's Advanced Research Institute, showcased their ongoing commitment to research excellence and collaboration in addressing global challenges. For more details on the symposium and future initiatives, visit the official Okayama University website.
