Raven Space Systems Claims $1 Million Top Prize in Horizon Manufacturing Cup at Indiana University

Horizon Manufacturing Cup Winners Announced

The American Center for Manufacturing and Innovation (ACMI) recently held its inaugural Horizon Manufacturing Cup at Indiana University in Bloomington. This exciting event showcased innovative manufacturing solutions through a fast-pitch competition, which promised a total of $3 million in non-dilutive funding for participating startups. The aim was to identify and support companies capable of advancing their production capabilities in critical manufacturing and technology sectors.

Grand Prize Winner
The top accolade of the day went to Raven Space Systems, which secured the grand prize of $1 million. This company focuses on developing automated production systems for essential composite structures and thermal protection—technologies that hold significant relevance in defense and aerospace industries. Blake Herren, the Chief Executive Officer of Raven Space Systems, expressed gratitude for the recognition, highlighting that this award would greatly accelerate their production timelines, allowing them to deliver critical rocket motor components significantly faster.

Other Remarkable Participants
Raven wasn’t alone in receiving accolades at the event. Four additional startups were also awarded funding, showcasing a range of innovative technologies:
1. Hybron: This company has developed proprietary manufacturing technology that allows for the rapid production of lightweight, high-strength composite components that are crucial for defense and aerospace applications.
2. Supernova: Leveraging advanced 3D printing techniques, Supernova is pushing the boundaries in the processing of highly viscous materials to enhance component performance.
3. Standard Bots: An American robotics company, Standard Bots focuses on automating hazardous tasks within the Defense Industrial Base, providing solutions that improve safety and efficiency.
4. Glīd: This company is developing dual-mode road-to-rail systems aimed at improving freight movement and logistics across various stages of production.

In total, twelve startups showcased their capabilities through accelerated presentations to a panel of experts from the defense and industrial sectors. Judges scored the participants based on criteria including technical merit, innovation, readiness of their products, and potential impact.

Supporting the Next Generation of Manufacturers
ACMI's initiative to host the Horizon Manufacturing Cup is part of a larger strategy to boost the U.S. manufacturing base and help innovative companies transition their prototypes into production. Ken Rothaermel, CEO of ACMI Federal, emphasized the need for unconventional thinking to solve complex industrial challenges quickly. He highlighted that while funding is crucial to get startups off the ground, providing infrastructure, equipment, and supply chain resources is essential for scaling operations.

As part of the winners' rewards, the five honorees will also join other promising companies at ACMI’s National Security Industrial Hub and Munitions Campus. Located adjacent to the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane, this 1,500-plus acre ecosystem offers access to world-class prototyping equipment, technical resources, and vital supply chains to transform these companies from prototypes to tangible production powerhouses.

An Invitation to Innovators
ACMI initiated the Horizon Manufacturing Cup to discover and scale critical hardware and manufacturing technologies, ultimately reinforcing the defense manufacturing supply chain. Open competition drew over 70 applications representing various sectors, demonstrating a strong interest among emerging businesses to contribute to national security.

As the competition evolves, ACMI continues its commitment to creating lasting partnerships within the industrial landscape, encouraging innovation and offering vital support to strengthen U.S. manufacturing and its contribution to national security.
