Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners Enhances UK Energy Portfolio Through 25% Stake in Offshore Wind Farm

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners Strengthens Renewable Energy Position

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has recently taken a major step in enhancing its involvement in the renewable energy sector by acquiring a 25% stake in the Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm. This acquisition, pivotal to the company's ongoing commitment to sustainable energy solutions, was completed through its fifth flagship fund, Copenhagen Infrastructure V (CI V).

The Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm, strategically located approximately 40 kilometers off the coast of north Essex and south Suffolk, represents a significant upgrade to the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure. The ambitious project is set to boast a massive capacity of up to 1,080 megawatts, having received the necessary development consent in December 2025 after extensive planning and consultation efforts that spanned more than four years.

A Collaborative Venture

With this acquisition, CIP partners with industry heavyweights, including EDF power solutions, which holds a 33.33% share, ESB with 20.83%, and Sumitomo Corporation, also with 20.83%. This collaborative framework ensures that the project benefits from a wide spectrum of expertise in the domains of development, financing, and operational management of large-scale offshore wind farms across the globe.

Kunal Patel, Partner at Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, expressed enthusiasm about entering into this strategic partnership, highlighting that the offshore wind sector presents the UK with a unique opportunity to not only harness clean energy but also contribute to stabilizing electricity prices and creating skilled job opportunities. He emphasized, "CIP is delighted to be further expanding our UK investment portfolio through acquiring a stake in Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm, and we look forward to working with partners to deliver the project."

Impacts and Future Prospects

Once operational, the Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm is projected to generate enough electricity to power approximately one million average UK homes annually. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the growing momentum of renewable energy initiatives and the urgent shift towards greener alternatives in the UK’s energy landscape.

Matthieu Hue, CEO of EDF power solutions UK and Ireland, echoed Patel’s sentiments, stating, "We are delighted to join our partners in the Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm project. This project perfectly complements our existing portfolio in the UK and Ireland. We look forward to working closely with our partners and local stakeholders to bring the project online and support the UK's energy independence and security."

Since receiving the development consent, teams have already embarked on a range of preparatory activities, including further enhancements to project design and early procurement work. Engagement efforts with landowners, communities, and other stakeholders have also been prioritized, ensuring that the project aligns well with local interests and environmental considerations.
