Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners Makes Strategic Investment in Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners Expands UK Energy Portfolio with Five Estuaries Investment

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has taken a significant step to enhance its footprint in the renewable energy sector by acquiring a 25% stake in the Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm. This deal, announced recently, occurs through the firm's fifth flagship fund, Copenhagen Infrastructure V (CI V). The strategic acquisition adds to CIP's already notable investments in the UK's energy infrastructure, which continue to evolve amid the global push for sustainable energy solutions.

The Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm, located about 40 kilometers off the coasts of north Essex and south Suffolk, has an impressive planned capacity of up to 1,080MW. After receiving development consent in December 2025 following an extensive four-year planning phase, the project promises to generate enough clean electricity to supply approximately one million average households in the UK annually.

CIP’s entry into this partnership aligns them with other notable investors, including EDF Power Solutions, ESB, and Sumitomo Corporation. Each of these organizations brings a wealth of experience in developing, financing, and managing large-scale offshore wind projects, making this collaboration a pivotal moment for advancing the Five Estuaries venture.

Kunal Patel, a Partner at CIP, expressed enthusiasm about the potential benefits of offshore wind energy for the UK, stating, "Offshore wind offers the UK a golden opportunity to deploy clean, home-grown energy at scale. This not only supports lower and more stable electricity bills but also fosters job creation and enhances energy security. We are thrilled to expand our UK investment portfolio through this stake acquisition."

Matthieu Hue, CEO of EDF power solutions in the UK and Ireland, reiterated the importance of this project, emphasizing that it perfectly complements the existing renewable energy portfolio within the region. He shared, “We are looking forward to collaborating closely with our partners to bring the Five Estuaries project online, thereby contributing to the UK's energy independence and security.”

Since obtaining development consent, considerable groundwork has been laid for the project, including design enhancements, early procurement efforts, and ongoing discussions with landowners and local communities. Such proactive engagement is essential for ensuring stakeholder buy-in and the successful implementation of the project.

The Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm is not just a local endeavor; it represents a broader commitment to revolutionizing energy production within the UK as the country looks to decrease its carbon footprint and meet growing energy demands sustainably. With the climate crisis a pressing issue, projects like this are vital for transitioning to a more sustainable future.
