Immunic Announces Erik Lundgren as New Chief Executive Officer to Pioneer Neurological Treatments
Immunic's New Leadership: Erik Lundgren Takes the Helm
Immunic, Inc., a forward-thinking biotechnology firm focused on developing novel oral therapies for neurological diseases, has made a significant leadership change. In a move aimed at propelling the company into its next phase of growth, Erik Lundgren has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective May 22, 2026. His official employment begins on June 1, 2026. Lundgren brings a wealth of experience from his notable career in biopharmaceuticals, particularly in multiple sclerosis (MS).
Lundgren succeeds Daniel Vitt, Ph.D., who will continue to guide the scientific strategy at Immunic and remain a board member. Under Lundgren's leadership, the company plans to push forward with the late-stage clinical development of vidofludimus calcium, a promising drug aimed at treating relapsing multiple sclerosis (RMS) and planned for primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS).
Michael W. Bonney, Chair of Immunic’s Board of Directors, expressed enthusiasm about Lundgren's appointment. “Immunic has built its foundation on its lead asset, vidofludimus calcium, which we consider one of the most innovative therapies in the MS space,” he stated. Bonney emphasized the importance of Lundgren's experience, particularly in guiding the company through the pivotal phase 3 trials and ultimately preparing for potential regulatory approvals.
Lundgren expressed eagerness to join Immunic at such a crucial time. “The last decade has seen substantial advancements in treating MS. However, the need for effective therapies remains urgent, especially those that can slow down disability progression,” he explained. Lundgren highlighted vidofludimus calcium’s unique mechanism that targets both immunological and neuroprotective pathways, making it a distinctive addition to the MS treatment landscape.
Lundgren has nearly 20 years of experience in biopharmaceuticals, encompassing commercial strategy and product launches. His last position was as Senior Vice President at Genentech, where he led commercial strategies across a variety of therapeutic areas. His tenure at Genentech also included helping to launch Ocrevus® (ocrelizumab), a landmark treatment for both RMS and PPMS, known for its successful market entry.
Dr. Vitt praised Lundgren’s capabilities and experience, anticipating that his background in MS will be invaluable as Immunic navigates critical milestones and transitions towards becoming a commercial-stage biotechnology company. He stated, “Erik is not only exceptionally skilled but also possesses the insight needed to steer Immunic through this pivotal period.”
Lundgren’s appointment comes at an important time as Immunic prepares for the data readout of the phase 3 ENSURE program for RMS by the end of the year and gears up for the NDA filing process, pivotal steps that could lead to market entry.
Immunic's lead drug, vidofludimus calcium, is currently undergoing extensive clinical trials, with top-line results for RMS expected by the close of 2026. This groundbreaking therapy combines neuroprotective effects with anti-inflammatory properties, positioning it as a potential game-changer in the treatment of MS.
Apart from the lead candidate, Immunic is also developing a broader pipeline aimed at addressing various neurodegenerative and autoimmune-related diseases, demonstrating the company's commitment to innovation in therapeutic development.
In a gesture of faith in his leadership, Immunic’s Board granted Lundgren an equity option to purchase 1,000,000 shares under their 2026 Inducement Equity Compensation Plan. This initiative underscores the commitment to aligning Lundgren's success with that of the company's future.
