AccessLex Announces Giana O'Shaughnessy as Scholarship Winner

AccessLex Institute Honors Giana O'Shaughnessy with $50,000 Scholarship

AccessLex Institute has declared Giana O'Shaughnessy as the winner of its third annual MAX by AccessLex® Hannah R. Arterian Memorial Scholarship. O'Shaughnessy is currently a first-year law student at the University of Oregon School of Law.

To qualify for this prestigious scholarship, candidates must complete the MAX by AccessLex® Financial Foundations course and participate in at least two MAX events. This year’s scholarship amounts to $50,000, reflecting AccessLex's commitment to providing financial support for aspiring lawyers.

The scholarship honors the late Hannah R. Arterian, who served on the AccessLex Board of Directors from 2011 to 2020 and chaired the board during her tenure. Arterian was instrumental in developing the MAX program, which aims to equip law students with essential financial knowledge and skills.

In her comments regarding the scholarship, O'Shaughnessy expressed her gratitude, stating, “The financial skills I learned through MAX by AccessLex® gave me a realistic perspective on budgeting after graduation. I particularly benefited from attending a web event focused on public interest careers.” She emphasized that she now feels more confident making financial decisions and has overcome much of the anxiety that previously surrounded her financial choices.

The MAX by AccessLex program is an award-winning, no-cost personal finance initiative aimed at law students. Accessible to almost 200 nonprofit and state-affiliated law schools, the program provides invaluable resources including live webinars, workshops, one-on-one coaching from Accredited Financial Counselors, and nearly $400,000 in scholarships each year. Since its inception, the program has disbursed a remarkable $2.5 million in tuition scholarships.

O'Shaughnessy noted the program's significant impact on her legal education, saying, “Taking advantage of AccessLex Institute's learning tools has equipped me with financial literacy and a clear trajectory for my next steps, both during and after law school.”

AccessLex Institute, established as a nonprofit, is dedicated to supporting future lawyers from the moment they apply to law school all the way through to passing the bar exam. The organization's mission has been to increase accessibility to legal education and positively impact students since 1983.
