Celebrating Digital Skill Graduates: Huawei's Kenya DigiTruck Initiative

Kenya DigiTruck: Empowering Youth with Digital Skills

On March 17, 2025, a significant milestone was achieved in Homa Bay, Kenya, when the Kenya DigiTruck project celebrated the graduation of 290 participants trained in essential digital skills. The DigiTruck, a unique initiative by Huawei, embodies their commitment to enhancing digital literacy under the TECH4ALL framework. This innovative program has made a substantial impact, particularly in underserved and rural communities, by providing the necessary tools and educational resources for the digital age.

The graduation ceremony marked the culmination of a six-week training program during which 143 women and 147 men learned critical digital competencies. The curriculum focused on vital areas such as computer skills, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and cybersecurity. This comprehensive training is essential in today's increasingly digital world, where such skills are not merely an advantage but a requirement for professional success and personal growth.

Dr. Raymond Omollo, Chief Secretary of the Interior and National Administration, emphasized the importance of digital skills, stating, "Digital skills are no longer optional; they are absolutely necessary. Whether starting an online business, working remotely, or utilizing technology, digital skills unlock numerous opportunities." This statement underscores the transformative potential of the DigiTruck initiative, which harnesses technology to democratize access to education.

The DigiTruck operates entirely on solar energy and serves as a mobile classroom equipped with workstations, internet connectivity, and various digital tools. Since its launch in 2019, this program has reached over 6,030 young individuals across 36 districts in Kenya. A special focus has been placed on equipping young job seekers, girls, and women with the resources needed to thrive in a digital economy. In 2024 alone, there were 906 female participants among the 1,648 trained, reflecting a commitment to gender equality in tech education.

Adam Lane, Director of Government Affairs and Policy at Huawei, shared insights into the broader impact of the DigiTruck initiative. He noted, "In addition to our collaboration with over 60 universities and TVETs for higher education programs, we leverage the DigiTruck to reach youth outside formal education and in rural areas. I take pride in our equal distribution of male and female participants because digital skills are genuinely necessary for everyone in today's economy."

This partnership involves various stakeholders, including the Kenyan Ministry of Information, Communication and Digital Economy, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the National Youth Council, and Safaricom. By aligning with the country's agenda for grassroots economic transformation and digital infrastructure enhancement, the DigiTruck reflects the Kenyan government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide, fostering future digital leaders, and nurturing a creative economy.

As part of the training program, an innovation competition encouraged participants to develop practical solutions for local community challenges. Winning teams created digital solutions aimed at improving healthcare services, enhancing the lives of local quarry workers, and increasing awareness about online safety and cybersecurity.

The skills acquired by DigiTruck graduates are expected to elevate enrollment in ICT courses, promote digital entrepreneurship, and encourage the application of digital solutions in rural areas. This initiative is part of the Skills on Wheels programs under Huawei's TECH4ALL strategy, which has trained over 110,000 individuals across 20 countries by the end of 2024, with mobile classrooms traveling over 50,000 kilometers.
