Latinas in Leadership Symposium: Empowering Voices and Celebrating Change

Empowering Leadership: Highlights from the 23rd Annual Latinas in Leadership Symposium

On June 5, 2026, an impressive gathering of nearly 800 attendees took place at the 23rd Annual Latinas in Leadership Symposium in Hartford, Connecticut. This year's theme, "Dare...Because Representation Matters," was a heartfelt celebration of leadership and the significant impact of Latinx voices throughout the region and beyond.

The symposium served as a dynamic platform for engaging discussions, professional development, and community building, reinforcing the organization's mission of nurturing, connecting, and promoting Latina leaders while creating opportunities for women across various sectors to succeed.

A highlight of the event was a powerful conversation with civil rights icon Dolores Huerta, whose decades-long commitment to social justice inspired the audience. Huerta emphasized the importance of viewing leadership through the lens of action and service, stating, "Leaders are people who do the work." Her stirring message resonated throughout the day, motivating attendees to harness their power, advocate for their communities, and lead with purpose.

In recognition of her incredible legacy of advocacy, leadership, and service, Huerta was awarded the Living Legend Award by Latinas in Leadership, honoring her lasting influence in civil rights, labor justice, and empowering future generations of leaders.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont also attended the event, joining in the celebration of the essential contributions of Latina leaders to the state’s economic, civic, and cultural landscape. His presence underscored the growing influence of women in leadership roles throughout Connecticut.

The agenda included a robust lineup of professional development workshops focused on leadership advancement, community advocacy, financial empowerment, and personal growth. A thought-provoking fireside chat delved into topics like resilience, representation, and paving paths for future leaders.

In addition to workshops, the event boasted a vibrant marketplace featuring 45 exhibitors showcasing women-owned businesses, nonprofit organizations, and resources dedicated to entrepreneurship and community empowerment.

The symposium also recognized outstanding achievements through its annual awards presentation. Three distinguished winners of the Latina Champion Award were honored for their dedication to advancing opportunities and equity for Latinas, while an exceptional business leader was recognized with the Entrepreneur of the Year Award for her innovation, leadership, and contributions to economic growth and community development.

One of the most inspirational moments came with the recognition of the recent graduates from the Latinas in Leadership Institute, the organization’s signature leadership development program. The graduates were acknowledged for their commitment and significant growth toward making impactful changes in their professions, organizations, and communities.

Reflecting on the transformative impact of the Institute, graduate Khio Santos expressed, "At one point along the journey, our mentorship transformed into something beyond family. It became survival, healing, and community." Her words encapsulated the spirit of the institute and the broader network of Latinas in Leadership, a community grounded in mentorship, support, and collective success. Santos further encouraged attendees to embrace the symposium’s theme of daring to challenge limitations and redefine what leadership looks like.

"As Latinas, many of us come from women who sacrificed in silence," Santos asserted. "But today, we are changing the narrative. We lead boldly, occupy space, and dare to dream big. So, dare!"

Reflecting on the event's success, Marilyn Alverio, the CEO and founder of Latinas in Leadership, emphasized the importance of investing in leadership development and creating spaces for Latinas to thrive. "The energy, talent, and determination felt at the symposium showcase the strength of our community and the importance of investing in identity-centered leadership," stated Alverio. "From Dolores Huerta's powerful call to action to the achievements of our Institute graduates, this year's event reminded us that leadership is not about titles; it's about service, courage, and doing the work."

Looking toward the future, Latinas in Leadership remains committed to broadening opportunities for women to lead, inspire change, and build stronger communities for generations to come.
