Okayama University Facilitator Qualification Acquisition for Children's Carbon Neutral Card Game

Promoting Carbon Neutrality through Play: A New Initiative by Okayama University

In an exciting development for environmental education, Associate Professor Yoshikawa from Okayama University has successfully acquired a facilitator qualification for a children's carbon-neutral card game. This initiative, spearheaded by the Kurashiki Junior Chamber, aims to teach kids about carbon neutrality through engaging gameplay.

On April 18, 2026, Yoshikawa participated in the official facilitator training course, part of a collaborative effort to enhance children's understanding of important environmental issues. The card game, developed in collaboration with Project Design Co., is nearing its completion and has undergone several improvements since its unveiling in February. This educational tool is designed to simplify the complex concept of carbon neutrality, making it accessible and entertaining for elementary school children.

During the training course, participants learned how to effectively prepare and manage events centered around the card game. This included practical exercises on game rules and card handling. A significant portion of the course was devoted to a warming-up activity that encouraged future facilitators to articulate personal goals related to carbon neutrality, fostering a deeper sense of commitment to their role.

Yoshikawa expressed that the design of the card game is straightforward enough for elementary school students while remaining enjoyable for adults. It's a simplified version for kids, making it feasible to conduct within two classroom periods, thus aligning perfectly with educational environments.

Prior to the training session, a second trial event took place where 24 participants, including local business affiliates and representatives from related organizations in Shimane and Tottori Prefectures, engaged with the game for about two hours. Feedback during the debriefing allowed participants to share constructive suggestions for further improvements.

The Kurashiki Junior Chamber is already in talks with local elementary schools to facilitate further use of the game, aiming to integrate it into educational settings effectively.

Looking ahead, Okayama University plans to harness Yoshikawa's newly acquired status as a certified facilitator to organize events where students can participate in the carbon-neutral card game. This initiative is designed to raise environmental awareness among students and promote practical understanding of carbon neutrality concepts.

Okayama University, being a prominent research institution dedicated to regional collaboration and sustainable initiatives, invites the community to look forward to impactful projects in the pipeline, especially those targeting future generations’ environmental education.
